The Essence of True Benefit

In the sacred text, The Infinite Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the , Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra), the Buddha speaks of bestowing upon all beings the 'True Benefit.' You may wonder what this truly entails. The 'True' in this context refers directly to the holy name of Namo Amituofo, while the 'Benefit' refers to the ultimate achievement of the Buddha's path. When you chant this name, you are planting the seed of Buddhahood; when you attain the fruit of this practice, you realise the state of a Buddha. Therefore, the act of holding the name of Namo Amituofo is the most direct and effective way to realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood. This is the true benefit that the Buddha wishes to bestow upon every suffering soul.

The Power of the Sacred Name

The name of Namo Amituofo is not merely a sequence of sounds; it is a vessel that contains the profound and boundless vow-power of the Buddha himself. To receive this benefit, one must engage in the following practices:

  • Arouse the Bodhi mind, which is the sincere aspiration to attain enlightenment for the sake of all beings.
  • Single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo, maintaining a focused and undisturbed heart.
  • Align your own heart and mind with Namo Amituofo’s Forty-eight Great Vows, ensuring that your intentions are in harmony with the Buddha's .

When you practise with such diligence, you will naturally attain the same fruit of Buddhahood that Namo Amituofo achieved through his own eons of dedicated practice.

The Ocean of Vows

The great Master Shandao once taught that the reason the Buddha appears in this world is solely to proclaim the ocean of Namo Amituofo’s original vows. This 'ocean of vows' is entirely contained within the six characters of the sacred name. By reading this sutra and hearing the name of the Buddha, you are given the opportunity to arouse the Bodhi mind and single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo. Those who can do this are truly individuals of great fortune and deep . You are walking the path toward the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, a realm where all conditions are perfect for your spiritual growth.

Transcending the Illusion of Samsara

Long ago, when Namo Amituofo was still the Dharmakara, he observed all beings wandering through the six realms of rebirth, suffering under the weight of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Out of deep compassion, he incorporated his vow to save all beings and help them attain Buddhahood into his Forty-eight Great Vows. One of the primary methods to leave suffering behind is to hear the name of the Buddha and hold it firmly in your heart. When Namo Amituofo established the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss ten kalpas ago, he placed this true benefit of attaining Buddhahood directly into his name.

You must understand that the cycle of rebirth is fundamentally illusory and temporary. Everything you encounter within the six realms—every person, every object, and every situation—is merely a fleeting appearance. If you allow yourself to be deluded by these illusions or become attached to them, you are drifting further away from the path to Buddhahood. This attachment is the opposite of the true benefit the Buddha offers. Therefore, you must be cautious and vigilant in your practice. Keep your heart pure, stay focused on the name, and do not let the transient shadows of this world distract you from your ultimate goal.
