The Constant Alignment of Heart and Mind

During the held in Australia, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered essential guidance on the practice of chanting the Buddha's name. To truly chant the name of Namo Amituofo is not merely a vocal exercise; it is a total transformation of one's existence. Throughout the twenty-four hours of the day, you must strive to align your heart, your thoughts, and your actions with the Buddha. When you constantly follow the Buddha's path in your daily life, this is the true meaning of chanting.

You must reach a state where your practice is continuous and effortless. This is the state of chanting while not chanting, and not chanting while still chanting. It is a profound level of meditative concentration where the Buddha's name resonates within you naturally, regardless of your external activity.

Integrating Practice into Daily Life

True practice is not confined to the meditation hall. You must integrate the Buddha's name into every facet of your life:

  • When you are eating, let your heart be with the Buddha.
  • When you are dressing, let your thoughts be with the Buddha.
  • When you are resting or sleeping, let your spirit be with the Buddha.
  • In every action you take, let the Buddha be present within you.

By doing this, you ensure that your practice is not a separate activity, but the very foundation of your life.

Avoiding the Trap of Superficiality

How many people mistakenly believe that simply moving prayer beads while reciting the name is enough? If your mouth is chanting but your heart is empty of the Buddha, then the beads, no matter how bright or polished they may be, do not represent true practice. If your actions do not reflect the Buddha's conduct, if your heart does not hold the Buddha's , if your thoughts are not aligned with the Buddha's wisdom, and if your vows do not match the Buddha's vows, then you are not truly chanting.

The Path to

You must use the Buddha's name to awaken your own Buddha-heart. When you chant, you are calling out to the Buddha within yourself. How can you know if your heart is truly connected? You will know when your practice becomes pure and sincere. When your heart is pure, you will find peace wherever you go. This is the attainment of Buddha-Recitation Samadhi, a state of deep peace and wisdom that remains as immovable as a mountain.

When external circumstances arise, treat them like the wind blowing past you. Do not let them disturb your heart. By remaining unmoved, you will naturally see your true self. When you reach the point where you chant without attachment and without wandering thoughts, you are truly chanting with a sincere heart. Remember, chanting is the cause, and becoming a Buddha is the fruit. By maintaining this practice, you will surely enter the of Ultimate Bliss. This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
