The Poverty of the Anxious Mind
Namo Amituofo teaches us that true abundance is not found in material possessions or the pleasures of the palate. Rather, it refers to the richness of the spirit—a truly abundant heart. When your heart is caught in the turbulence of restlessness, irritability, sorrow, anxiety, or worry, it becomes like a parched and barren land, lacking the nourishment of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. In such a state, the spirit feels impoverished and empty, constantly searching for something to fill the void.
Conversely, when your heart rests in a state of contentment, peace, and , it is truly abundant, lacking nothing. This is the state of a spirit that has found its home in the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
The Virtues that Enrich the Spirit
There are specific qualities and virtues that allow a practitioner to cultivate this richness. When you embody these, your spirit becomes vast and full, leaving no room for the poverty of the . These virtues include:
- : The heartfelt desire to help all beings leave suffering behind and find happiness.Joy
- : A deep, inner contentment that does not depend on external circumstances.Letting go
- : The ability to release attachments to the past, to outcomes, and to the ego.Wisdom (Prajna)
- : The clear insight that allows one to see the Truth of the universe.Mind-capacity
- : The ability to hold space for all things without judgment.Tolerance: A vast, inclusive heart that embraces all beings with patience and understanding.
These qualities are not merely external behaviours; they are the natural fruits of a cultivated heart. For Those who have realised their true nature, these virtues are naturally present. They flow from within, requiring no external seeking or artificial effort.
The Natural State of the Awakened Being
An awakened being lives in a state of and selflessness. Because the ego—the sense of a separate, grasping 'I'—has been dissolved, there is no longer any need for the constant, exhausting cycle of self-centred thinking and worrying. When the burden of the ego is lifted, , mind, and spirit are finally free.
In this state, are no longer restricted by karmic habits. Their innate, pure functions can manifest naturally. This is the power of the awakened spirit, which is used entirely for the benefit of others: to save beings, to resolve their suffering, and to respond to their needs.
The Effortless Flow of Compassion
Because these actions arise from a heart that is empty of ego, they are entirely effortless. They are as natural as eating when you are hungry or drinking when you are thirsty. This is because the awakened being understands that all beings are one; there is no division between 'you' and 'me'.
Yet, despite this unity, the awakened being remains perfectly clear and aware of the needs of others. There is no confusion, no anxiety, and no doubt. It is a state of absolute coolness and ease. This, truly, is what it means to possess a rich spirit.
