The Heart of the Path

For those who practise the Pure Land path through the chanting of the Buddha's name, the core of your practice lies in the commitment to "arouse the mind and single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo." You make the vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, with the ultimate aspiration to become a Buddha. As you approach the end of your life, while chanting the name of Namo Amituofo in every thought, you naturally yearn to see Namo Amituofo arrive to lead you into the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Some practitioners may even be granted the grace to know the time of their departure in advance, receiving word from Namo Amituofo regarding the exact date and hour of their arrival in the West. Seeing Through Heart, Vow, and Action

Instead, you should strive to see the Buddha through your heart. When you can engage in a heart-to-heart connection with Namo Amituofo, that is the true vision, far surpassing any attachment to physical sight. You should also see the Buddha through your vows. Take the vows of Namo Amituofo as your own vows for practice and for saving beings. Use the Forty-eight Great Vows as the foundation for your conduct in this world and as your guiding light for rebirth in the Pure Land. Furthermore, you must see the Buddha through your actions. Emulate the Buddha-actions of Namo Amituofo in saving countless suffering beings. By doing so, you will receive the Buddha’s , enabling you to save yourself and assist other beings in being reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
