On the eleventh of June, 2022, Namo Amituofo provided this discourse regarding the nature of success and failure.
In this world, we are constantly surrounded by two extremes. We perceive life through a lens of binary opposites, such as black and white, right and wrong, victory and defeat, or poverty and wealth. These are the common markers by which the world measures value.
Within the Buddha’s teachings, we encounter a deeper set of dualities that define the spiritual journey: Buddha and demon, the right path and the wrong path, confusion and awareness, goodness and evil, purity and impurity, and the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss versus the six realms of rebirth. These are not merely abstract ideas; they represent the essential challenges that every practitioner must face and overcome during their practice.
In this life, as you engage in practice, you must understand that the true measure of success or failure is revealed at the moment when the elements separate and your life in this world comes to an end. At that critical juncture, the destination of your spirit and whether you have successfully realised your true self will determine the outcome of your journey.
To achieve success, you must first learn to distinguish between what is illusory and what is real. You must discern the difference between temporary suffering and lasting happiness. Only by doing so can you awaken your awareness and find the strength to confront your own personality, deep-seated habits, and the born of confusion.
Everything in this world is impermanent. All things are caught in the cycle of arising and ceasing. This is the nature of illusion. Within this illusory realm, you must remain vigilant and clear-headed. You must recognise the truth of reality and move forward according to your own level of understanding and ability.
If you encounter difficulties, remember that you are not alone. You have the guidance of the Buddha and the support of Practitioner Su. You should make good use of what you have learned and put it into diligent practice. Do not be deceived by external appearances, which may cause you to retreat or fall. Instead, hold onto your correct understanding and move straight ahead with unwavering resolve.
Success and failure reside within the hearts of all disciples. They are decided in the fleeting moment between life and death. They are forged through your diligent practice, your ability to see through the illusions of the world, and your willingness to let go of attachments. It is my sincere hope that all disciples will succeed in their practice, dedicate themselves to save the world and all suffering beings, and ultimately become an awakened being who returns to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
