The Essence of Welcoming

The act of welcoming guests is a profound gesture of recognition and respect. It is not merely a social formality, but a deliberate, mindful practice that acknowledges the presence of those invited to join us on the path of the .

Defining the Honoured Guest

Who is considered a guest in this spiritual sense? A guest is one who possesses specific qualities: those invited to seek the Truth, those rare and difficult to encounter, those who possess true virtue and moral conduct, and those who hold a position of respect through their wisdom or capacity to serve others. By welcoming such individuals, we affirm their unique capabilities and the positive influence they bring to the world.

The Skillful Means of

Welcoming guests is a skillful means used in the great work of saving the world and rescuing infinite suffering beings. It serves as a bridge that connects hearts and opens doors to the Dharma. When we welcome others with sincerity, we create an environment where the seeds of can be nurtured.

Beyond the Chains of

It is essential to understand the nature of those we welcome. For those who have not yet transformed their karma, their worldly wealth and status are merely the fruits of past actions. While these good fruits bring temporary happiness, they remain bound by cause and effect. However, for those who have transformed their karma, their spirit is free, and they move through this world with ease and clarity.

The Path of Humility and Sharing

If a guest understands that every being inherently possesses the true self and Buddha-nature, they will see the world with new eyes. They will realise that differences in capability, influence, or status are merely the result of varying degrees of confusion and the extent to which one has purified their mind.

Those who understand this principle will naturally become more humble and modest. They will feel deep gratitude for what they possess and be willing to share their with the community. They will strive to help others leave suffering behind and gain happiness, wishing for others to live lives as abundant as their own. When this spirit of gratitude is passed on, the Buddha’s teachings flourish. This is the true meaning of welcoming guests.
