The Fleeting Nature of Our Mortal Journey

Words of Namo Amituofo: My children, life is limited in its duration, and the reality of existence is far deeper than what you currently know or perceive with your physical . In this very moment, countless beings across the universe are experiencing the profound sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death. You may ask, "Is there truly no happiness to be found in this world?" This question arises from the hearts of those who are currently living in comfort, protected and cared for, having not yet tasted the bitterness of deep suffering. You have heard of the impermanence of life and the cycle of rebirth, yet these concepts remain distant to you.

The Mirage of Transient Delights

You are the fortunate ones. You have the rare opportunity to practise the before you have been crushed by the weight of suffering. You have the chance to understand the nature of suffering without having to endure it yourself. However, I wish for you to understand that the happiness of this world is fleeting, illusory, and ultimately hollow. Is this truly happiness? Consider the consequences of chasing such transient pleasures:

  • If you pursue only worldly desires, you will eventually reap the bitter fruits of .
  • You may find yourself falling into the deep abyss of the cycle of rebirth.
  • You risk descending into the hells to endure the suffering of punishment.
  • You will lose the precious opportunity to elevate the quality of your spirit and achieve rebirth in the .

Is such a trade-off truly worth it? People often cling tightly to these short-lived, illusory joys, refusing to let go, while conveniently forgetting the immense suffering that is required to sustain them.

to the Eternal Light

True happiness is found only in awakened being. It is the state where one can clearly recognise the truth of reality without being deceived by illusory environments. When you reach this state, you will find:

  • Autonomy: You are no longer controlled by your or your , and you can truly be the master of your own life.
  • Harmony: Your Body-Mind-Spirit becomes perfectly coordinated, leading to a state of profound purity and inner peace.
  • Freedom: You are liberated from the cycle of rebirth and no longer forced to endure the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

Often, when people witness the suffering of others or the helplessness of aging, sickness, and death, they feel that it has nothing to do with them. They assume it is merely a natural process that everyone must go through. In truth, you have already tasted unspeakable bitterness and endured endless suffering throughout countless aeons for the sake of your physical body and your desires, yet you have forgotten it all.

The Compassionate Guidance of the Dharma

If you do not know how to be grateful, how to cherish your , and how to cultivate new blessings in this life, then once your current blessings are exhausted, you will inevitably begin to taste the bitter fruits of your past actions. This is why Buddhist education is so vital. It is the light that guides you through the darkness of ignorance. Specifically, education regarding the laws of karma and cause and effect serves as a form of spiritual prevention.

If you wait until the karmic results manifest and you are already suffering before you seek to understand the laws of karma and cause and effect, it is already too late. You must practise prevention before the suffering occurs. Do not allow pain to arise simply because you were ignorant of the truth. This is the ultimate purpose of Buddhist education—to help you leave suffering behind and find happiness. Namo Amituofo.
