The Truth of Birth and Death
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Second Session of the Thrice Yearning Ceremony, November 20, 2019
The Pristine Ocean of No-Birth
Our original nature is fundamentally beyond birth and death. It is the pristine, unchanging reality that exists before any manifestation occurs. The concepts of birth and death are merely later developments, arising only after we have strayed from our true source. Originally, we reside within the pure ocean of no-birth, a state of absolute clarity and stillness. However, once we become entangled in the cycle of birth and death, we begin to sink and float within the turbulent waves of our own .
The Turbulent Waves of Karmic Illusion
In our original state, we are empty and formless, existing in a realm of pure potential. Yet, as we descend into the world of form, we manifest the polluted and turbid appearances of birth and death. We often mistake these fleeting appearances for reality. We find ourselves trapped in the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, suffering through the relentless changes that define our existence. These experiences are like shadows, illusions that obscure the truth of our own nature.
The Pure Path of the Buddha-Name
Even within the midst of this cycle of birth and death, the potential for purity can still arise. If you can maintain a continuous, pure recitation of the Buddha-name, Namo Amituofo, you create a bridge back to your original nature. When you chant with a mind that is free from attachment, you reach a state where every thought is no-thought. In this profound stillness, you transcend all distinctions and enter into the oneness of the universe, returning to the state of no-birth.
Returning to the Boundless Void
All things in the universe share the same original nature as you. We are only separated from this truth by the illusion of birth and death. When you finally turn your focus inward and realise your true face, the barriers of the ego dissolve. You will be filled with boundless gratitude as you merge with the vastness of the void. This is the ultimate goal of your practice: to leave suffering behind, find true happiness, and return to the eternal, pure light of the . This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
