Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
On the twenty-third of November, 2025, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered these profound insights regarding the nature of our existence.
Impermanence is the fundamental state of this world. Every being, every object, and every event is caught in a perpetual cycle of change. This is the true manifestation of Causal Conditions, where things arise and perish in a continuous flow. We live our lives within this shifting landscape, yet we often fail to recognise its true nature.
If you can truly understand this principle, you will be able to maintain a heart of meditative concentration that remains unmoved even amidst the most turbulent changes. Only by achieving this inner stillness can you navigate the ever-changing events of life with peace and clarity. Without this foundation, one is easily swept away by the tides of external circumstances.
This truth of impermanence applies to everything. It is evident in the fluctuations of the human heart, the inevitable process of birth, aging, sickness, death, and the constant changes within our internal organs. The world outside is even more volatile. The Earth itself is not permanent; it is subject to the cycle of formation, existence, decay, and emptiness.
The human body is merely a combination of elements governed by Causal Conditions. It is in a state of constant motion, never pausing for even a single moment. From the very instant of birth, we begin the journey through aging and sickness, which is, in essence, a step-by-step progression toward death. Everything we perceive is a fleeting shadow of this reality.
Only your true self remains eternal and unchanging. It is not affected by any internal or external interference. The purpose of your practice is to rediscover this original, unchanging nature. When you chant Namo Amituofo, you are not merely reciting words; you are stabilising your own heart and the hearts of the countless beings residing within you. This practice helps to slow the physical changes of , including the most subtle signs of aging.
The Western Land of Ultimate Bliss is a realm constructed from the true self. Under the Buddha's , this land remains in a state of constant stability. Because it is free from the constant changes of the world, those who reach it are granted infinite time to practice and eventually become a Buddha. This is the magnificentgrace that Namo Amituofo bestows upon all beings.
