The Unity of Knowledge and Action
Namo Amituofo's Discourse
The Foundation of Spiritual Progress
Namo Amituofo teaches us that the unity of knowledge and action is the cornerstone of all spiritual progress. Knowledge, in its purest sense, is what we acquire through listening to the sutras and hearing the , observing the world, and experiencing the interaction between our Six Roots and . However, we must understand that this knowledge is not the ultimate destination. It is a tool—a vital instrument for what we call True Cultivation.
When you use this knowledge to refine your heart and mind, you are using the temporary to reach the eternal. You are using the tools of this world to uncover your true self. Once you have successfully cultivated your true self and see your true nature, you will naturally let go of these tools. You will no longer be used by them; instead, you will be able to use them with perfect skill to teach beings. This is the true meaning of the unity of knowledge and action: it is the path that provides you with the opportunity to rediscover your true self.
The Trap of Worldly Attachment
In the mundane world, many people believe they have achieved a form of unity between knowledge and action. They study, they act, and they see results. However, the people of this world do not know how to let go. Their thoughts and intentions are in constant motion, and they remain deeply trapped by their own discriminations and attachments. Because they cling to their knowledge and their actions, they are ultimately used by them. They fall back into the cycle of , bound by the relentless laws of and the causes and effects of their own making.
If you wish to transcend this, you must learn to observe your own mind. When your every thought and intention is in constant motion, you are not in control; you are being controlled by the very knowledge you have accumulated. To break free, you must learn to release these attachments, allowing your heart to return to a state of stillness and clarity.
Transforming Knowledge into Spiritual Power
During the process of your practice, if you can achieve a true unity of knowledge and action—grounded in right knowledge and right conduct—this knowledge will transform into a powerful force for your growth. It will become the fuel that propels you forward on the path to . Once you have transformed your karma and see your true nature, you will naturally be able to set aside these concepts. You will no longer be limited by your knowledge or your actions. You will be free to move through the world with ease, no longer dominated by the heavy weight of past karma.
However, there is a great danger in possessing knowledge without action. If you have the right knowledge but fail to put it into practice, that knowledge becomes nothing more than empty talk. It possesses no power. In fact, it can become a burden, attracting and causing the manifestation of karma as obstacles to your progress. This stagnation only serves to pull you deeper into the cycle of reincarnation.
The Path of Right Conduct
When you are engaged in your practice, your actions may appear to be the same as those of anyone else in the world. Yet, your heart knows the truth: you are acting not for your own benefit, nor for fame or profit, but for the sake of self-liberation and the salvation of all beings. This is what we call right knowledge and right conduct.
Within this practice, if you can maintain the chanting of Namo Amituofo, you are engaging in a profound act of purification. You will receive Buddha's , which will allow your practice to proceed smoothly. The good fruit that arises from this smooth progress will benefit an infinite number of suffering beings. Do not dismiss small acts of Goodness, and do not engage in even the smallest acts of evil. This is the law of karmic conditions and the causes and effects; it is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
The Daily Practice of Purification
You must strive for the unity of knowledge and action. Even if a virtuous act seems small, perform it. Even if a negative act seems insignificant, avoid it. By following this path, you will find that your knowledge and action become one, and you will reap the profound benefits of this alignment. In the school, we focus our diligent practice on our daily practice:
- Prostrations: Bowing to the Buddha to humble the ego and purify the heart.
- Chanting Buddha's name: Invoking the Buddha's name to align our mind with the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
- Reciting the Sutras: Studying the teachings to deepen our understanding of the Dharma.
You must understand that these actions are specifically designed for Purifying , heart, and spirit,方能修行有成. Only through this consistent, dedicated practice can you achieve success. Once you have attained this unity of knowledge and action, you must continue to practise diligently until you reach Awakening and realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood. Ultimately, you will be able to help beings when you save beings, helping them to use these same methods—prostrations, chanting, and sutra recitation—so that they, too, may receive Buddha's blessings, achieve purification, and attain Buddhahood.
