Interview with Dr. Helmut Sohmen (Former Chairman of BW Group)
On August 2, 2019, Venerable Yongning, who now resides in the of Ultimate Bliss, shared a message regarding the importance of diligent practice. Having sought deliverance through the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, Venerable Yongning now assists in the work of saving sentient beings across the universe alongside Practitioner Su.
Venerable Yongning speaks:
". The fourfold assembly of disciples has gathered here together. Each of us possesses different and has developed unique capabilities, yet we all move forward in our spiritual achievements, each fulfilling our own roles. Along with Practitioner Su, we have been travelling throughout the universe to perform for countless sentient beings. Witnessing the myriad states of these spirits, I cannot help but sigh—I no longer have a physical body to use, and I cannot exert the immense power that Practitioner Su does to save them.
For those of you who still possess a human body, you must rely on your practice to overcome the many obstacles that stand in your way. Think about the : wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep. If you cannot see them clearly for what they are, if you cannot let them go, and if you are still desperately clinging to even a single object—a bowl, a bed, or a pet—then you are destined to wander aimlessly in this world. Your heart’s desire to seek liberation is simply not firm enough.
This world is filled with too many illusions. Our relationships with parents and children, between men and women, and among friends—all these worldly connections are merely shackles. They are forms of mutual dependency. Whether these relationships last for ten years or twenty, no matter how close you are, you will eventually have to part ways. The deeper you plant your roots, the deeper the sorrow when the time comes to separate. These are all worldly triggers. These triggers seem so natural, appearing as instinctive reactions of , but it is precisely these reactions that cause our spirits to linger and refuse to return to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Studying the Buddha’s teachings and listening to the sutras is meant to help everyone become clear-headed and awake, so that you no longer cling to anything. When we speak of relationships, there are countless others scattered throughout the vast, boundless void that are connected to us. If you look more closely, you will see that all kinds of cravings, desires, and emotions are terrifying karmic entanglements. They are difficult to let go of and impossible to untangle, and they frequently surface within our thoughts.
At such moments, you must not fall into the trap of these emotional scenarios and be dragged away by them. Instead, you must immediately awaken and realise that the state before your eyes is not real. The people and things you love the most are the very ones most likely to obstruct you, manifesting quietly and naturally before you. The human body can be described as a complex code; because it has thoughts, emotions, and a sense of 'self,' it remains trapped in a cycle of constant turmoil.
If you were to cultivate clairvoyant vision and look at how the human body becomes blocked by our thoughts, you would never dare to live this way again. You might see different parts of the body turning black, or covered in many spots, or perhaps manifesting as stone-like masses—all of these are created by our own incessant, wandering thoughts. These are truths that many people in the world do not yet know, but the Buddha’s teachings reveal them truly and clearly.
Now that I have written this down to share with you all, everyone should take heed. The fourfold assembly of disciples must be even more diligent in their practice, exerting the and the power of deliverance inherent in the Buddha’s teachings to their fullest extent. Move forward bravely and continue without pause. The gates of the temple will welcome you all. The sentient beings have been waiting for a long time; they are just waiting for you, the disciples, to purify yourselves further and elevate your skills, so that you may lead one more layer of sentient beings to salvation.
