It is often said that no one is a sage, and who among us can be without fault? People frequently use this sentiment to excuse their own mistakes or the transgressions of others, hoping to find a path toward forgiveness and a chance to begin anew. However, if we use this wisdom as a convenient excuse to forgive ourselves too easily, we fall into a dangerous cycle. When we repeat the same mistakes over and over, we strip this profound saying of its true, noble intent. We must realise that our faults are not merely isolated incidents; they are deeply intertwined with the laws of .
Every time we commit a wrong, we plant a karmic seed. Once this seed is sown, it waits in the depths of our for the right conditions to mature. When those conditions finally align, the evil consequences will manifest in our lives. This is the inescapable reality of cause and effect. As the saying goes, Bodhisattvas fear the cause, while ordinary beings fear the result. The most effective way to avoid the suffering of evil consequences is to avoid planting the initial cause altogether. Yet, many people today are blinded by their own ignorance. They only begin to regret their actions when the bitter fruit of their past deeds has already manifested and they are forced to endure the resulting suffering.
For practitioners, the highest strategy is to use the to prevent mistakes from occurring in the first place. If a mistake has already been made, the next best approach is to raise your awareness immediately. You must recognise the fault, break through your ignorance, and change your ways right then and there. By doing so, you can halt the progression of the mistake, stop the karmic cause from ripening, and prevent the evil consequences from taking root. If your awareness is obstructed, you will find it difficult to stop your faults, and you will inevitably repeat them. Consequently, the evil consequences will never cease, and your suffering will continue without end.
If you have committed a fault without realising it, and you are fortunate enough to encounter a true spiritual friend or a favourable affinity that reminds you of your error, you should feel deep gratitude. You must accept this guidance with an open heart and change your ways immediately. Similarly, when you encounter the Dharma Jewel, such as through lectures or reading profound texts, every word, every sentence, and every article has the potential to stir the goodness, pure thoughts, and virtuous seeds within your heart. In that very moment of being stirred, if you sincerely recognise your fault and quickly repent, change your ways, you are actively dissolving your karma and reducing your transgressions. This is the path to true purification.
