The Vigilance of the Heart: Awakening to Our Thoughts
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded by Shi Fajing on September 12, 2023
Venerable Changren is a dedicated monastic who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, where they currently reside. This interview, which explores the vital practice of observing our mental states and the purification of the heart, was recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fajing, on September 12, 2023.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Venerable Changren. Today, I wish to invite everyone to embark on a journey of introspection—a journey inward to the very source of our actions and our suffering. Have you ever paused to consider the landscape of your own mind? In the span of a single day, how many thoughts of Goodness arise, and how many evil thoughts take root? It is a question that demands our full attention.
Time flows like a river, relentless and swift. From the beginning of the year, we find ourselves once again approaching its end. Throughout this passage of time, have you ever truly paid attention to this heart of yours? It has been with you every moment, constantly functioning, constantly reacting, yet how often have we neglected it, buried under the weight of our busy, chaotic lives?"
The Unseen Landscape of the Mind
"Every human being possesses a heart, and this heart is the fertile ground from which all our experiences grow. It has the capacity to generate thoughts of profound Goodness, yet it is equally capable of producing dark, evil thoughts. Many people have fallen into the habit of defaulting to negativity. When faced with any situation, they instinctively view it through the lens of the worst possible outcome. This is a common human tendency; we believe that by anticipating the worst, we can somehow shield ourselves from the pain of disappointment. We call it 'being prepared,' but in reality, it is a form of mental imprisonment.
There is another type of person, one whose heart is more deeply entrenched in negativity. For them, every event is filtered through a critical, cynical perspective. They live in a state of perpetual unhappiness, and because their thoughts are constantly clouded by judgment and dissatisfaction, their entire life becomes a murky, suffocating environment. Whether the negativity is mild or severe, it is a universal struggle. We all, to varying degrees, suffer from this lack of control over our own mental state."
The Power of Conscious Observation
"Today, I want to guide you in observing your own heart. How much of the time is this heart truly under your own command? How much of it is being steered by external forces, by habits, or by the shadows of the past? We must learn to take hold of our hearts. We must not allow our minds to be so easily disturbed by external influences that we lose the ability to clearly perceive the nature of our own thoughts.
In the twenty-four hours of a single day, we encounter countless people, events, and objects. Each one of these has the potential to cause ripples in our hearts, triggering a cascade of different thoughts. I encourage you to try and observe these thoughts as they arise. What is your heart thinking right now? Is it emitting a thought of Goodness, or is it succumbing to an evil thought? Do not underestimate the power of this simple practice. When you make a habit of observing your own mental notes, you have already begun the process of transformation. All change must begin with awareness. Without the ability to perceive what is happening within, even if you desperately want to change, you will find yourself lost, for you do not know what needs to be altered."
Transforming Through Every Thought
"This awareness of the nature of our thoughts is the key to our liberation. When an evil thought arises, do not rush to condemn or criticise yourself. You have been conditioned by years of habit, and change takes time. Instead, use this moment of awareness to teach yourself. Gently guide your heart toward the right path. Shift your perspective, change your focus, and help yourself turn away from the darkness and toward the light of Goodness.
You must understand that a single evil thought has the power to awaken countless within your own body, drawing them to you like a beacon. Conversely, a single thought of Goodness can purify the magnetic field around you and even begin to transform your own heavy karma. Make it your practice to think of Goodness, to cherish Goodness, and to act with Goodness. This is the greatest gift you can offer to yourself, to all beings, and to everyone you encounter in your daily life. Let us walk this path of together, one thought at a time.
Namo Amituofo."
