The Virtue of Patience in Your Practice
A Discourse from Namo Amituofo

The Challenges of the Wandering Mind
My children, have you ever found yourselves in situations where you lose control of your emotions? It is a common struggle for practitioners to face moments where they feel unable to master their own hearts. You may encounter specific people, events, objects, or environments that trigger deep-seated anger and resentment. In such moments, you lose your , your patience, and your ability to make wise judgments.
Consider these common struggles that often arise in your daily life:
- You may face a task and, in your haste to complete it quickly, expend vast amounts of time, energy, and spirit, yet fail to achieve the desired result.
- You may hear negative words or rumours, and because your meditative concentration is not yet stable, your thoughts are stirred, leading to of frustration or the desire to abandon your practice.
- You may find yourself repeatedly interacting with the same people or situations, and with each encounter, your mind fluctuates, causing you to lose your inner peace.
The Weight of Karmic Influence
When you listen to the sutras and hear the , do you feel a stirring in your heart, or perhaps a moment of true ? It is important to reflect on how you interact with the fourfold assembly of disciples at the bodhimanda. Do you find that differences in opinion or internal fluctuations lead to negative emotions? When you lack wisdom, you may inadvertently create negative through your body, speech, and mind. You may struggle to overcome your personal habits, fail to restrain your six roots, and ultimately break your .
You must understand that these situations are often not entirely of your own making. When you cannot master your own heart, you are being led by your karma. In such states, you are influenced by your , attached spirits, and demon crowds. Your heart follows the environment instead of transforming it. This is a dangerous state, and you must be constantly vigilant.
Cultivating the Path of Wisdom
In your practice, every person, object, and environment is a test. They are there to examine whether you truly possess compassion, wisdom, patience, tolerance, and a vast mind-capacity. If you cannot face these challenges with a calm, meditative concentration and wisdom, you will inevitably plant negative causes. When these negative causes mature, you will suffer the evil consequences. Whether this suffering manifests now or in the future, it remains suffering.
Therefore, you must diligently practise your daily lessons to protect your body, mind, and spirit. You must inject the Holy Name, Namo Amituofo, which is the , into every cell of your body and into the ear-roots of all the beings around you. Once this seed enters the ear-root, it becomes a permanent seed of the path. This is how you will eventually be able to resolve conflicts with the fourfold assembly and help all beings find liberation.
The Power of Silence and the Holy Name
I urge you to speak less and chant more. Every word you speak can trigger thoughts and intentions that attract spirits and create further karma. If your speech interferes with the quiet retreats of others, you are also creating negative karma. Instead, focus your energy on the Holy Name. By keeping your speech minimal and your heart focused on the Buddha, you move from confusion to awakening, from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity. Namo Amituofo is the light that guides you home.
