The Manifestation of a Pure Heart

To follow the wishes of beings is a profound expression of a practitioner's inner state. It is not merely an act of agreement, but a clear manifestation of one's wisdom, , and tolerance. Every being possesses a unique character and nature, and consequently, their desires and aspirations differ greatly. As practitioners, we must understand that we cannot simply fulfil every request that comes our way, for not all desires are conducive to spiritual growth.

True wisdom lies in the ability to discern whether a wish or desire aligns with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. When we can distinguish between what is beneficial and what is harmful, we are exercising the wisdom of the Buddha. Compassion is the active response to this discernment; it is the willingness to follow a being's wish when it is appropriate, thereby helping them leave suffering behind and find true peace and happiness.

The Three Pillars of Skillful Means

Following the wishes of beings requires a delicate balance of three essential qualities:

  • Wisdom: The ability to judge whether a desire is in accordance with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
  • Compassion: The heart to accommodate the wishes of others to alleviate their suffering and bring them comfort.
  • Tolerance: The capacity to accept the imperfections and shortcomings of others, maintaining a steady and open heart regardless of their current state.

When you practise this, you must remain flexible, adapting your approach according to the person, the time, and the place. By doing so, you can significantly reduce conflicts, misunderstandings, and disharmony. When wisdom, compassion, and tolerance are unified, you are naturally able to fulfil the wishes of others in a way that serves their ultimate spiritual well-being.

Leading Beings into the Ocean of Vows

The practice of following the wishes of beings is a skillful means. As the teachings suggest, we must first hook them with their desires, and only then can we lead them into the Buddha's wisdom. This is the compassionate method used by all Buddha or to guide sentient beings. By first meeting them where they are, we build the trust and connection necessary to eventually lead them into the vast, infinite ocean of Namo Amituofo's vows.

You yourself are also a being among beings. Can you learn to accept others as they are? Can you first follow their wishes to bring them comfort, and then gently lead them toward the path of learning the and diligent practice? This is the true purpose of this method: to help beings change, to remove defilements and attain purity, and ultimately to realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood.

The Path to Buddhahood

Those who wish to save beings must be adept at using this method. It is a bridge that leads others into the Buddha's gate. Once they have entered, they can begin their journey of diligent practice, transforming their lives from confusion to , from wrong paths to the Right Way, and from impurity to purity. Through this, every being is given the precious opportunity to eventually become a Buddha. May we all walk this path with a heart of compassion and a mind of wisdom, never ceasing in our efforts to save all suffering beings.
