The Mirror of the Mind

Namo Amituofo teaches us that the ability to see is a function of the eyes, which are one of the (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind). When an ordinary person perceives the world, the images enter their with remarkable speed. Relying on the past experiences stored within the eye-consciousness, the mind immediately makes discriminations and forms attachments, giving rise to thoughts that are then deposited into the , where they are archived as .

When these thoughts and intentions are triggered in the future, the and the causes and effects manifest as either good karma, negative karma, or pure karma. If one can chant the holy name of Namo Amituofo and, under the Buddha's , maintain this practice continuously without interruption, they will purify the field of karma within the Alaya consciousness. Such a person is truly a wise person.

Sowing Seeds in the Field of Consciousness

Why do we describe the karma within the eight consciousnesses as a field? It is because this field manifests according to the Faith, Vows, and Practice of the cultivator, bearing the fruits of good causes, negative causes, or pure causes. Within this field of karma, the consciousness is not limited to the eye-consciousness alone; it also encompasses the ear-consciousness, nose-consciousness, tongue-consciousness, body-consciousness, mind-consciousness, the Manas consciousness, and the foundational Alaya consciousness.

When you look out at the world, if everything you perceive and allow into your consciousness is pure and good, you will give rise to all and achieve the fruit of . Here, the term 'roots of goodness' refers to the state where the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) are rooted in virtue, allowing for the growth of magnificent fruits—the fruit of Bodhi that leads to the attainment of Buddhahood.

Beyond the Sway of Greed and Anger

When you look out at the people, things, and scenery of this world, it is easy for your thoughts and intentions to be swayed. You may feel greed and attachment toward scenes that bring you , or resentment and anger toward situations that you find tiresome. This is the state of being led by the power of karma, which will surely obstruct your practice!

However, if you can see beings suffering and immediately give rise to a heart of , wishing to save them, you are on the right path. By making the great vow to practise, reach an awakened being state, attain Buddhahood, and save beings by guiding them to rebirth in the , and by remaining active and persistent, you will certainly receive the Buddha's blessings and find success in your practice.

The Compassionate Gaze of the Awakened

When one becomes an awakened being with 'open eyes,' their perception transcends the mundane. They can see the true state of the space around them, including the suffering of sentient beings. They can perceive the suffering of those within the six realms of existence, as well as the suffering of demon crowds in this world and beyond. Because they see this clearly, they take practical, concrete actions to save these beings. This is a great fortune for all sentient beings and even for the demon crowds who are trapped in their own cycles of suffering.
