Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

In the course of your spiritual practice, if you encounter difficulties or find yourself stuck, please understand that this is not a sign of defeat. Rather, it indicates that there are still faults, inadequacies, or missing pieces within your current approach. At such moments, you must face these challenges directly. Because you have identified these specific areas of deficiency, you can now focus your efforts on improving them. You can strengthen what is weak and correct what is flawed. As long as you have a single breath remaining, there is always an opportunity to move forward. This is the true meaning of retreating to advance, and it is precisely what makes the human body so precious.

The Perils of Lingering in Stagnation

If you allow yourself to fall into negative behaviours or mental states—such as stopping your practice, shrinking away from challenges, or regressing—you will find that your Body, Speech, and Mind become clouded. When these three karmic gates are not properly guarded, you become vulnerable to the following:

  • may come to seek revenge for past grievances, causing you to suffer in your Body-Mind-Spirit.
  • You may inadvertently create new layers of , further entangling yourself in the cycle of rebirth.
  • Your progress will stall, making it difficult to maintain the clarity required for diligent practice.

If you did not possess a human body, even if you were aware of your shortcomings, you would be a spirit without a body. Such spirits lack the physical vessel and the environment necessary to undergo the rigorous training required to refine their nature and overcome their karmic obstacles.

The Harmonious Union of Self and Buddha

The path is a unique method that relies on the dual support of and Buddha's . It is a harmonious interaction between your own efforts and the infinite of Namo Amituofo. If you rely solely on your own strength, you will find it insufficient; however, if you do not activate your own power, the Buddha's blessings have no place to take hold. Your self-power must arise first, and it manifests in several ways:

  • Acceptance: You must honestly accept your own faults and inadequacies without judgment or denial.
  • Transformation: You must actively work to change personality traits that hinder your progress.
  • Supplementation: You must diligently seek to fill the gaps in your understanding and practice.

The Boundless Strength of Vows

To truly transform karma, your vow power must be greater than your karmic force. You must cultivate compassion and wisdom, and from this foundation, make a firm vow to save all beings. When you chant Namo Amituofo with unwavering focus, you are not merely reciting words; you are affirming your Buddha-nature. By chanting Namo Amituofo all the way, you solidify the conviction that you are already a Buddha in essence. Through this combination of activating your own power and receiving the Buddha's blessings, you will naturally gain meditative concentration and wisdom. Your original nature will then manifest clearly before you. Remember, the ability to retreat and then advance again is a profound experience that will grant you new insights and a deeper understanding of the . Namo Amituofo.
