The Wisdom of the Buddha: Cells and the Spirits Within
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on March 31, 2024

When a cell within your body withers and fades, the spirit residing within that cell must depart. Once this cell spirit leaves its former home, it does not simply vanish into nothingness. In the vast majority of cases, the spirit will seek to enter a new cell, specifically one that has just been born within . The nature of the new environment that this spirit enters is not random; it is determined entirely by the and the state of mind that the spirit carries with it.
If the consciousness of this cell spirit is filled with goodness, it will naturally be drawn to a new cell that is healthy, vibrant, and free from damage. Conversely, if the spirit carries a consciousness of negativity, it will be drawn to a cell that is weak, diseased, or structurally compromised. If the consciousness of the spirit is deeply tainted by malice or extreme negativity, it will inevitably be drawn to even more corrupted environments, such as newly forming cancer cells or cells that are currently in the process of spreading disease throughout the body.
The Symphony of the Microcosm
The demon crowds that may influence a person are also subject to the state of the individual's true self. The thoughts and physical actions of the practitioner determine whether the internal environment remains calm and pure or becomes turbulent and tainted. This creates a ripple effect, leading to vastly different outcomes for the development of one's Body-Mind-Spirit. The creation of new cells in your body is not merely a biological process; it is a manifestation of your internal state. These new cells are formed from the nutrients you consume, the energy within your body, and, most importantly, the thoughts held by your true self.
If the thoughts of your true self are rooted in goodness, your body will manufacture healthy, virtuous cells. If your thoughts are rooted in negativity, your body will manufacture cells that are inherently flawed or harmful. This is why the quality of your inner world is the primary architect of your physical reality.
The Radiance of the Buddha-Name
If you can maintain the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo 24/7, your mind will remain in a state of constant connection with the Buddha. When your mind is occupied by the Buddha-name at every moment, the new cells that your body produces will naturally become cells that are in sync with Namo Amituofo. As this process continues, your entire physical structure—your facial features, your body shape, and even the very tone of your skin—will begin to reflect the compassionate presence of Namo Amituofo. This is the true meaning of the principle that Appearance arises from the mind.
Therefore, the most auspicious state you can achieve is to ensure that the Buddha-name is never absent from your mind. You must strive to think good thoughts, look upon the world with kindness, speak words of wisdom, and perform virtuous deeds. By doing so, you will give rise to all and achieve the fruit of . This practice helps your body continuously grow cells that are pure, kind, and filled with the vibration of the Buddha-name.
The Eternal Journey of the Spirit
As you continue this practice, a time will come when every cell in your body is capable of chanting Namo Amituofo. At this stage, you will reach a state where you are chanting yet not chanting, and not chanting yet chanting. This represents a profound elevation in the spiritual quality of your entire body and the spirits residing within your cells. The consciousness of your true self directly influences the consciousness of the spirits within your cells, and these, in turn, influence the spirits of all other beings within your internal environment. This interconnected cycle is occurring within you at every single moment.
Because of this, if you can ensure that your chanting becomes a continuous, flowing stream that never stops, the Buddha-name will permeate your entire being. This will assist your body and your cell spirits in remaining within an environment of pure goodness. It will adjust your physical constitution, transforming it into a purified body composed of virtuous cells. When your entire body is purified, your cells will no longer age in the way of the mundane world. The four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind within you will become harmonious and pure, leading to a state where illness cannot take root. When the time finally comes for your spirit to leave the body, you will know that the spirit never dies. A spirit that has been refined through the constant chanting of the Buddha-name will, upon leaving the body, be welcomed into the of Ultimate Bliss. Through this diligent practice of purification, you will attain the body of an awakened being and secure your rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
