In the teachings of the Buddha, we often speak of two fundamental concepts that define our reality: Direct Retribution and Dependent Retribution. Direct Retribution refers to the world of your own body, mind, and spirit. It is the core of your existence, the vessel through which you experience life. Dependent Retribution, on the other hand, refers to your external environment—the people, objects, and circumstances that surround you.
Many people live their lives believing that they are victims of their circumstances. They feel that their external environment dictates their happiness or suffering. However, the true practitioner understands that the goal of practice is to transform the environment, rather than being transformed by it. This is the essence of true mastery over one's life.
When the Direct Retribution of your body, mind, and spirit is purified and grounded in meditative concentration, and you act in accordance with the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path, a profound shift occurs. The Dependent Retribution of external people, events, and environments will naturally follow and transform along with your Direct Retribution.
This is the skill of practice: to transform the environment rather than being transformed by it! Beings who are reincarnated are dominated by and follow the dictates of their , being transformed by the environment rather than transforming it, which gives rise to all manner of suffering. All suffering stems from karma; if one can cease karma, one ceases suffering, which is one of the purposes of practice.
From a spiritual perspective, the true self and the heart of this body are the Direct Retribution, while the countless cells within , the , the attached spirits, and the demon crowds are the Dependent Retribution. If one wishes to transform karma through practice, the Direct Retribution of the true self and the heart must be purified and grounded in meditative concentration, so that one may transform the spirits of the karmic creditors, attached spirits, and demon crowds within the body, providing an opportunity to transform karma and advance in one's practice.
If the Direct Retribution of the true self and the heart is polluted by the and and lacks meditative concentration, one will be subject to the demands and grievances of karmic creditors, as well as the interference and obstacles caused by attached spirits and demon crowds, resulting in unrest within the body, mind, and spirit, causing one's practice to stagnate or regress.
Chanting the Buddha's name, to "arouse the mind and single-mindedly recite ", "chant one Buddha's name to the end", and holding the conviction that "I am a Buddha, and I am a Buddha who has come to save others", is an excellent method for purification and meditative concentration in practice, and is the shortcut to transforming the environment, transforming karma, realising one's true nature, and attaining Buddhahood.
