The Many Faces of the Spirit

Every person possesses a heart. Beyond the physical heart that sustains the functions of , there is the heart of the spirit. Throughout the long cycle of being reincarnated, this spiritual heart has manifested in countless different forms. These manifestations are so numerous that they are difficult to count, appearing in hundreds of thousands of variations across the vast expanse of time.

These countless appearances in the cycle of rebirth are all reflections of your own past. They are stored deep within your , specifically within the eight consciousnesses and the fifty-one mental factors. Within this storehouse, you also carry the remnants of your past habits and the "self," personal ego, and selfishness that have defined your previous lives.

The Weight of Karmic Seeds

Because of these personal habits and the "self," personal ego, and selfishness, you have created various karmic causes. These actions have resulted in both positive and negative , and the you have encountered along the way are also stored within this consciousness. As long as you possess a physical body in this life, your spiritual heart resides within it, carrying the heavy burden of these past records.

When your thoughts, your personal habits, or your "self," personal ego, and selfishness touch upon these past records, the karmic creditors are triggered. This is the manifestation of karma. Once this occurs, the process of karma begins to unfold:

  • You may be called to settle old debts.
  • You may be required to repay past grievances.
  • You may find opportunities to repay a kindness.
  • You may experience the consequences of past actions that have finally matured.

The Cycle of Suffering

Consequently, the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death becomes the reality of your existence. Whether it is suffering, pain, helplessness, or sorrow, these experiences manifest before your eyes and within your body. They allow your physical form to taste the various fruits of your past actions. As your heart fluctuates in response to these experiences, you generate new causes, which will inevitably lead to new results in the future.

Thus, the life of an ordinary person is spent entirely within karma. You drift through the six realms of existence, experiencing birth, aging, sickness, and death, life after life, in an endless cycle. This is the nature of the samsaric path.

The Path to

Today, however, you have the opportunity to practise. You have reached a turning point where you can change your trajectory. By engaging in diligent practice, you can transform the karma of rebirth into pure karma. Through active and persistent effort, you finally gain the opportunity to transcend birth, aging, sickness, and death, to chant Namo Amituofo, and to enter the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.

When you successfully transform the heavy, murky karma of your consciousness into a heart that is clear, transparent, and untainted, you will finally have the opportunity to realise your true nature. This is the path to becoming an awakened being. Namo Amituofo.
