In our daily lives, we are surrounded by a multitude of people, events, and objects. Each of these serves as a mirror, offering us a constant opportunity for vigilance. We must learn to look upon the world not merely as a collection of external phenomena, but as a profound teacher that guides our spiritual progress.
Whenever you encounter a member of the fourfold assembly who manifests qualities of goodness, purity, or kindness, you should rejoice and offer praise. Their presence is a reflection of the light within. Conversely, if you witness states that are unwholesome, evil, or polluted, you must treat them as a warning. Do not follow their path, and do not commit the same errors. Once you have seen or heard such things, let them awaken your awareness. You must clearly understand the laws of and cause and effect. By severing the cause, you avoid suffering the bitter fruit.
Every thought and memory that arises is an expression of karma in action. If you allow yourself to be led by these thoughts, you are being controlled by your karma. This is the very reason it is so difficult to escape the cycle of being reincarnated. If you are a student of the Buddha, you must learn to stop these wandering thoughts and memories. Do not stir up the past actions stored within your karma. If you do not provide the conditions for these seeds to sprout, the beings to whom you owe karmic debts cannot manifest to seek repayment. This is how you avoid suffering the bitter consequences of past actions. This is the principle of halting karma.
You must use the purity, goodness, and vows contained within the Buddha-name to stop all other thoughts. We must be diligent in clearing the mind of:
Let there be only the Buddha-name, and no other thoughts. Continue this until you reach the state where you chant without chanting, and where there is no chanting yet the chanting remains. When the and meditative concentration manifest, even when you are not consciously chanting, the Buddha-name will be orbiting within your heart, your body, and your mind. You will no longer be disturbed or controlled by external states. When your heart is constantly abiding in the Buddha-name, this is the time of and seeing one's true nature. .
