When the Heart Changes, the Results Follow
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
On the twelfth of December, 2025, during the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered profound guidance on the nature of our hearts and the fruits of our actions. When the heart changes, the results follow accordingly.
The Ripple Effect of the Mind
Every action we take begins with a cause, and every cause inevitably leads to a result. This process is governed entirely by the state of our hearts and the nature of our thoughts. When we speak of the causes created by the mind, we are referring to every thought and intention that arises within us, and the fluctuations of the mind that accompany them. The stronger these thoughts and intentions are, the more powerful these fluctuations become. These waves of energy do not remain contained within us; they ripple outward, and the amplitude of these vibrations determines the extent of their influence on the world around us.
The strength of your practice and the energy you project into the world will dictate the nature of your . If you project thoughts of Goodness, you will naturally reap the fruits of Goodness. Conversely, if your mind is filled with negative, harmful, or evil thoughts, you will inevitably encounter the bitter fruits of those actions. Both good karma and negative karma are formed through these fluctuations of the mind—a state of constant, restless motion.
The Stillness of the Enlightened
However, consider the state of one who has attained deep meditative concentration. When there are no wandering thoughts and no fluctuations of the mind, one enters a state of profound stillness. In this unmoved state, one does not trigger old karmic debts, nor does one create new causes. This is how one can live a life of pure, cool, and free existence. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as those with deep meditative power, dwell in this state of stillness, which is why they remain untouched by the turbulence of the world.
The Purest Thought
When we chant Namo Amituofo, we are cultivating a pure thought. This is not merely a good thought or a bad thought; it is a thought of absolute purity. By making this pure thought the primary cause of our existence, we plant the seed that will eventually lead to the fruit of Buddhahood. This is the essence of transformation: when the heart changes, the path of our actions changes, and the results follow accordingly.
Transforming the Past
Think back to the situations you have encountered in the past. Perhaps you reacted with displeasure, or even with anger, when faced with certain people or circumstances. In those moments, you were creating a cycle of mutual resentment and unhappiness. But now, through your dedicated practice and purification, you have the opportunity to change. When you encounter those same people or situations again, you can choose to respond with and gentleness. By transforming the cause, you transform the result. You will find that the fruits you harvest are no longer bitter, but are instead positive, uplifting, and filled with the light of Goodness.
