Teachings from , recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on the second of August, 2025.
When the heart transforms, the environment transforms; when the environment follows the heart, it is because one has attained meditative concentration and has become the master of one's own life. Such a person possesses a heart that is pure and remains unmoved by external circumstances. Conversely, if the environment transforms and the heart follows it, one lacks the necessary concentration to be self-governing. In this state, the heart becomes stained and obscured, losing its inherent purity.
When you follow the pull of your and the influence of the masses, you inevitably suffer. This is the characteristic state of beings within the six realms of existence. You perceive these sufferings as real, yet they are merely illusions. If you can attain a moment of , you will realise that you can use this false reality to cultivate the truth. You will eventually see the true nature of reality, for every being possesses an original, true self, though it is currently obscured by ignorance.
practice is the process of purifying this heart. Through the continuous of Namo Amituofo, you are assisted in removing stains and attaining purity. As your afflictions, ignorance, and various obstacles are removed one by one, your purity is revealed. At this point, the heart transforms, and the environment follows it. This is the time when you have truly attained meditative concentration and self-mastery.
When you chant the sacred name of Namo Amituofo without interruption, your heart transforms, purity is attained, and naturally arises. Within the act of chanting, you are simultaneously practising the following:
By practising these together, the transformation of the heart and the environment takes on a different, more profound quality. Every thought is filled with the Buddha, and every thought is blessed by the Buddha. Every thought is pure, and every thought arises from the state of non-action. As your body, mind, and spirit are purified, the land itself becomes pure, and the light of awakening and true nature begins to shine forth.
When you work to deliver sentient beings, you must ensure that you are not being turned by them. You must maintain the strength of your Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom. You are the primary subject, the one who cultivates, while the beings you help are part of the environment. The primary subject must be able to transform the environment; when the heart changes, the environment changes with it.
Your own heart is a boundless Buddha-land. When you can transform your environment, you can deliver beings on a vast scale. This is the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, which exists entirely within your own heart. It is the pure land of the Buddha, waiting to be realised through your sincere practice.
