Where Do the Demons Dwell?
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
The Manifestation of the Unrefined Self
What is a demon? In the context of our spiritual journey, a demon is not necessarily a supernatural entity from afar. Rather, it is a manifestation of an intense personality. When our character is rigid or extreme, it inevitably causes harm to people, to things, and to the external environment. You may ask, where do these demons dwell? They reside both within your body and outside of it. When they exist within, they can inhabit any part of your physical form, influencing your thoughts, your health, and your very essence.
The Demons Within
These internal manifestations take many forms, each affecting a different aspect of your being:
- The Heart Demon: This manifests when you hold onto matters too tightly. It is the root of repetitive, anxious thinking. It creates a sense of urgency that burns within you like a raging fire, leaving you unable to find peace.
- The Brain Demon: This resides in the head and leads to scattered, delusive thoughts. It is a constant stream of mental noise, where the mind is preoccupied solely with selfish desires and personal gain.
- The Shoulder and Neck Demons: These manifest through your posture. Some hold their heads high in arrogance, while others slump in deep self-deprecation. Both are signs of a mind that has lost its balance.
- The Lung and Organ Demons: These disrupt the natural, harmonious functioning of your internal organs, often manifesting as physical illness or chronic pain in various parts of the body.
- The Eye and Face Demons: The eye demon causes you to see only the negative, to look down upon others, or to glare at people. The face demon manifests as a dark, displeasing, or furious expression that causes others to keep their distance from you.
The Cycles of Life and Death
Beyond these specific bodily manifestations, there are the fundamental demons that govern the cycle of existence:
- The Birth Demon: This brings crisis and danger into the process of creation and new beginnings, with results that follow the path of or even exceed it in severity.
- The Aging Demon: This accelerates the decline of the physical body, leading to rapid deterioration.
- The Sickness Demon: This creates obstacles that make healing difficult and recovery elusive.
- The Death Demon: This brings the finality of the physical form, causing the body to cease its functions and transition into the next stage of existence.
The and Their Shadows
Furthermore, we must be vigilant against the primary afflictions that cloud our original nature:
- The Greed Demon: This is the feeling of never having enough. It fuels the , manifesting as the greed for wealth, the pursuit of sensual pleasure, the craving for fame, the obsession with food, and the indulgence in sleep.
- The Anger Demon: This arises easily, and like a fire, it burns down the forest of your accumulated merits, opening the gates to countless obstacles.
- The Delusion Demon: This is the state of foolishness where one repeatedly commits the same mistakes, refusing to change even when counselled.
- The Arrogance Demon: As previously mentioned, this is the pride that blinds one to the truth.
- The Doubt Demon: This is a deep, corrosive suspicion that prevents faith from taking root.
Purification and the Path to
These various demons reside within the body, often manifesting as or attached spirits. Their presence is summoned by your own mental notes and habitual patterns. It is my hope that by identifying these causes, you will become more vigilant. If you fall into these states, you allow these negative forces to operate within the flow of your karma, seeking revenge or creating harm that is even greater than the original karmic debt. You may even attract external demons to enter your body, causing profound damage to your Body-Mind-Spirit. One must be cautious!
You must act quickly to change your personality traits. Listen to the sutras, hear the , and never forget to chant Buddha's name for purification. Subduing your delusive mind and transforming your demon nature is the essence of your practice. Only when you can transform your Body-Mind-Spirit into a state of supreme goodness can you truly say that you are walking the path of practice.
