The Foundation of Your Spiritual Journey
To the fourfold assembly (monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen), I ask you to reflect deeply upon your daily life: where does your heart truly abide? In the quiet moments of your day, and even in the midst of your busiest activities, where is your mind anchored? This is not merely a question of location, but a fundamental inquiry into the state of your spirit and the direction of your practice.
If your heart dwells within the realm of interpersonal conflict, the constant weighing of personal gain and loss, or the rigid patterns of the 'self,' personal ego, and selfishness, you will inevitably find yourself adrift. When you allow your mind to be captured by the opinions of others, by the cycle of praise and blame, or by the pull of emotional desires, you are setting yourself on a path that leads only to suffering.
The Weight of
Why is this the case? It is because these attachments are all manifestations of the laws of and cause and effect. When you focus on these worldly concerns, you are feeding the negative energy that results in suffering. You become trapped within the cycle of aging, sickness, and death. This is the natural consequence of a heart that has not yet learned to rest in the Truth.
However, you have the power to change this. If you choose to anchor your heart in the following practices, you will begin to see a profound transformation:
- Diligent practice: Focus on changing the 'self,' personal ego, and selfishness, moving away from the ego and toward a state of purity.
- The Buddha-name: Keep your heart anchored firmly on the name of Namo Amituofo.
- Listen to sutras and hear the : Dedicate your time to listen to sutras and hear the Dharma, allowing the wisdom of the Buddhas to permeate your .
- Studying the teachings: Reflect deeply upon the teachings of Namo Amituofo and the guidance provided by Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju.
- Daily devotion: Engage fully in your morning service, which includes prostrations, chanting Buddha's name, spiritual deliverance, and recite the Sutras.
When you place your heart in these activities, you generate positive energy. This energy acts as a catalyst to dissolve karma, remove your obstacles, and eventually lead you toward .
The Dangers of the
Conversely, if your heart dwells in Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt, or if you remain attached to wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, you are actively creating karma. The result of such a life is the accumulation of evil consequences. If you repeat these actions without making a sincere effort to change, the negative energy you cultivate will lead you toward the suffering of the hells. It is a heavy burden to carry, and one that is entirely avoidable through the practice of the Right Way.
If your heart is caught in a state of confusion, oscillating between good and evil, your practice will remain unstable. You will find yourself in a state of constant unrest, moving forward one moment and retreating the next. This inconsistency prevents you from reaching the stillness required for true progress.
The Path to Ultimate Liberation
To achieve the purification of your spirit and reach Awakening, you must anchor your heart in the Six Paramitas:
- Generosity (Giving): Giving freely of your time, resources, and .
- Discipline (): Upholding the Precepts to keep your mind clear.
- Patience (Endurance): Enduring the challenges of life with a calm and steady heart.
- Diligent practice: Maintaining your effort without faltering.
- Meditation (Concentration): Cultivating the stillness of concentration.
- Wisdom: Developing the insight to see the Truth of the universe.
Furthermore, you must live your life through Compassion, , and Selfless Giving, serving all beings with a heart that seeks nothing in return. If you anchor your heart on the Buddha-name, chanting Namo Amituofo with every breath, and sincerely vow to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss, you will receive the Buddha's . This combination of your own sincere effort and the Buddha's power will ensure that you are leaving suffering and gaining happiness, ultimately fulfilling your wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
