The Life and Journey of Lay Practitioner Nan Huaijin
Lay Practitioner Huang Xiazhen, mother of Jianyi and Jian'er, sought deliverance through at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This interview, which reflects upon her journey from the realms of suffering to the Western Pure Land, was recorded by the chief writer, Fa Ning, on January 23, 2026.
Huang Xiazhen speaks:
". I am Huang Xiazhen. I am so deeply grateful for all the good Causal Conditions that have brought me to this moment. Here in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, I can see the impermanence of human life with absolute clarity. I can see how the Causal Conditions of the world rise and fall, shifting like the tides. Perhaps this is why the Greatly Compassionate Namo Amituofo bestows such high-level spiritual powers upon those of us who reach the Western Pure Land. It allows us to look back at our past lives and see the illusions of the world clearly, which in turn inspires us to seek the Buddha’s path and save sentient beings.
When I was alive, I followed your father and came into contact with many of the Buddha’s teachings. But to be honest, I did not truly understand what the Buddha’s teachings were. I only knew that they were good, that they taught people to be kind, and that they offered a better destination after death. I thought that if I learned Buddhism alongside my husband, our family life would be more complete and harmonious. Now, from the perspective of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, I can see the selfishness and impurity hidden within those initial thoughts. I have come to understand that when one learns the Buddha’s teachings, one should follow the Buddha, not follow one's husband for the sake of family harmony. In the eyes of worldly people, my previous attitude was perfectly normal, but for someone truly seeking to leave suffering behind and gain happiness, and to achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land, it was not enough.
It is only because my children, Jianyi and Jian'er, arranged for my Chao Du that I was able to end the cycle of birth and death and escape the three realms. It was through the merit and the profound skills of Practitioner Su that I was brought to the land of Namo Amituofo, and only then did I gain the opportunity to see everything with such perfect clarity.
Huang Xiazhen now stands upon the golden ground of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, offering my most sincere and grateful heart to the teaching master of the West, Namo Amituofo, and to the great Practitioner Su. I never imagined that a person could cultivate to the level that Practitioner Su has reached. Here in the West, I have come to understand the magnitude of her work—the countless billions of sentient beings, including those from the Earth, the galaxy, the universe, and even the demon crowds from the outer heavens and the Realm, that she has delivered. Among those who have realised their true nature, she is truly a leader of the highest order. I had only ever read about Bodhisattvas and ancestral masters returning to the world to save sentient beings in the scriptures. But after being pulled from the hells and brought to the Western Land of Dharma Nature at the temple, I witnessed, as a spirit, the true manifestation of Buddhas and Tathagatas appearing in the human world to rescue beings from all their suffering.
I know that the two of you might find it difficult to accept that I had to suffer retribution in hell, but it is an undeniable fact. In truth, I was the one who found it hardest to accept at first. While I was suffering in hell, I knew I should be repenting, but I did not truly understand where my mistakes and faults lay, so the effect of my repentance was limited. Fortunately, because you arranged for my Chao Du, Practitioner Su brought Namo Amituofo to the hells, radiating golden light. She rescued my suffering spirit, which was wailing in the midst of retribution, and brought me to the Western Land of Dharma Nature at the temple. Only after listening to the sutras and hearing the Dharma did I realise that one cannot have even a shred of selfishness. Although I was considered a good person in the world and did not commit any major evils, my subtle selfishness—my attachment to protecting my husband, my family, and myself—combined with my identity as a lay practitioner, left a specific trail in the laws of and cause and effect. That is why I ended up suffering retribution in hell.
I do not hold any resentment; I simply did not understand. Fortunately, the Dharma taught by Practitioner Su continuously cleansed my soul. Today, having been reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss and under the blessing of Namo Amituofo, I finally understand how far off the mark I was. Hahaha, Jianyi and Jian'er, you are both such filial children. Mother hopes that you will continue to learn the Buddha’s teachings, come to the temple, and learn from the great physician of the Buddha’s path. Please, tell more people the news that Namo Amituofo is present at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. If you are willing to do this, it will truly be your own tremendous blessing.
Now, in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, your father and I are doing wonderfully. I am not very good with words, but I can tell you that here in the West, I feel absolutely no burdens. It is as if my heart has been opened wide; I feel so free. I can only say that I am truly happy here, or perhaps I should say I am filled with Dharma joy, right? Hahaha! I hope that the two of you can also come to the West and reunite with us. Before that, the first thing you must do is let more people know about the benefits the temple brings to humanity—that we can be free from aging, free from illness, and that our spirit never dies, and that even the deceased can be led into the Western Pure Land.
I am grateful to the Buddha for his , and to Practitioner Su for her compassion. I also thank my two children, who have such great . I hope that all people in the world will know that there is a Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, and that Namo Amituofo is there. Those who believe will be blessed. Come quickly to see the Buddha.
Namo Amituofo."
