Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:

My dear students, do you wish to be one who possesses true autonomy over your own body and spirit? Or would you rather remain a puppet, allowing your body and spirit to be manipulated by the heavy weight of , the influence of , and the interference of spiritual attachments? To be a master of one's own life or to be a victim of external forces is a choice that rests entirely within your own heart.

The Mirror of the Heart

Your heart is revealed through your actions and is clearly reflected in your personal ego and selfishness. When you allow your negative habits to manifest, you are effectively surrendering your autonomy. This occurs when you fall under the sway of the following afflictions:

  • Greed: An insatiable desire for worldly gain.
  • Anger: A volatile temper that burns away your peace.
  • Ignorance: A lack of understanding of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
  • Arrogance: The pride that prevents one from learning and growing.
  • Doubt: A lack of faith that hinders your spiritual progress.
  • Wrong Views: Distorted that lead you away from the path of .

When these states arise, you are no longer in control; you are being controlled by your own past actions and the karmic forces they have set in motion.

The Four Virtues of the Autonomous Practitioner

Conversely, if you can manifest the Four Virtues, you are truly a person who has achieved autonomy. These virtues are the hallmark of a practitioner who has regained control of their spirit:

  • Adapting to Conditions with Skillful Means: Responding to every situation with wisdom rather than emotional reaction.
  • Gentleness and Uprightness: Maintaining a soft, compassionate heart while remaining firm in your commitment to the truth.
  • Dignified Conduct: Living by the and setting a positive example for others.
  • Taking on the Suffering of Beings: Cultivating the Bodhicitta to help others leave suffering behind and find happiness.

The Journey of Transformation

The entire process of practice is essentially the struggle between being controlled by your karma and achieving the autonomy of an awakened being. This transformation can happen in the blink of an eye, in a single moment of clarity, or with a single sincere thought. However, for many, it remains a difficult journey that spans across accumulated lifetimes.

You must ask yourself: Can your good roots from past lives be purified? Can you manifest the appearance of purity and goodness? Can you, through the development of your wisdom and keen spiritual awareness, finally break free from the control of your karma and karmic creditors?

Achieving True Buddhahood

When your heart is as still as water, free from the ripples of desire and attachment, you can face the world with pure meditative concentration. In this state, your innate wisdom manifests, and your entire being radiates with light. This is the moment of , the moment you attain Buddhahood, and the moment you finally achieve true autonomy.
