Awakening to the Truth: Understanding the World
Teachings from Namo Amituofo

The Unveiling of the Eternal Self
Namo Amituofo teaches us that true practice is not for the sake of . This is because your true self already exists; it is your original nature, your Buddha-nature. It is the authentic, eternal you that has always been present. However, in this current life, this true self has been obscured. You have allowed the false self—the self driven by the cycle of rebirth and the weight of —to take control of your life. To practise effectively, you must work diligently to remove this false self and clear away the dust and stains that have accumulated upon your heart. Only then will you be able to behold your original, true self.
The Radiance of Our Original Nature
Your original nature is complete and perfect. It lacks nothing. Within it, you possess:
- Infinite Wisdom (Prajna) that transcends all worldly knowledge.Boundless virtue and capability to benefit all beings.Auspicious characteristics that radiate the light of the .
When you return to this state, your and wisdom work in perfect harmony. You will find that your actions flow naturally with the Dharma, without effort or attachment. Most people are strangers to this true self; they do not even know it exists. They mistakenly believe that the self which loves to argue, the self that insists its own views are correct, and the self defined by ego-attachment is who they truly are. In reality, that is merely the self created by the laws of karma and cause and effect. It is illusory, arising and ceasing according to Causal Conditions. It is not your original, true self, which is why we call it the false self. The true self is unborn and undying.
The Mirage of the Karmic Realm
Because you have spent countless aeons in the cycle of rebirth, you have become accustomed to living alongside this false self. You have spent your days identifying with it, not knowing or recognising your true, original nature. By mistaking the false for the true, you have become lost in the cycle of rebirth. In this world, all beings—whether human or otherwise—are living in this same state of delusion. They treat one another through the lens of the false self, and in doing so, they create Collective Karma together. Driven by this karma, beings drift through the six realms:
- The Three Good Realms: The human realm, the heavenly realm, and the realm of the asuras. The Three Evil Realms: The hells, the realm of hungry ghosts, and the animal realm.
You have spent lifetime after lifetime wandering through these realms. Throughout all this time, your true self has never left you, yet it has been covered by layers upon layers of filth, hidden from the light of day.
The Clarity of Sudden
When you, as a child of the Buddha, finally understand this truth, do you feel a sudden moment of clarity? You must realise that this world is false. It is a construct of karmic forces, a grand illusion. Yet, people invest all their energy, physical strength, and wealth into it. They strive for and cling tightly to these illusory appearances that they cannot take with them when they die. This includes their attachments to emotions, family, spouses, children, and friends. Within this illusion, they endure the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, as well as the pain of not being able to be with those they love and not being able to obtain what they desire. Their days are filled with more suffering than happiness.
The Journey Toward Ultimate Liberation
Once you understand the reality of this world, you must actively engage in True Cultivation. You must remove the stains and purify your heart. Let your true self—your self-nature—see the light of day and manifest its brilliant radiance. This is the mark of a wise person. Once you have sought and found your true self, and once your true nature is in command, you will achieve true liberation. You will finally leave suffering behind and find happiness. This is the only way to truly save yourself and lead all beings to rebirth in the , rather than being led by the delusions of the world. Namo Amituofo.
