Broadly Saving All Connected Beings
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded and transcribed by Venerable HaiZe on 1 August 2025
The Boundless Scope of Salvation
The act of saving sentient beings transcends the limitations of time and space. It knows no boundaries between this world and other realms. When we speak of saving beings, we must first look within ourselves. The beings residing within our bodies are the first to be saved. This includes our ancestors through the ages, our parents and teachers from countless past lives, our , our family members, attached spirits, and even those who may be considered demonic. All of these are beings who have shared a karmic connection with our true self throughout our long journey in samsara.
Understanding Our Karmic Connections
Why are these beings considered connected to us? In the context of and the causes and effects, this connection signifies that we have planted seeds in the past. When these conditions are ripe in the future, the result of meeting and being saved will manifest. This process does not distinguish between this world or other realms, the past, the present, or the future, this space or other dimensions, or the six realms of existence and the Four Sacred Realms. All of these are sentient beings with karmic affinity. To broadly save all connected beings is an expression of , Wisdom, mind-capacity, and tolerance.
The Qualities of the True Self
Compassion, Wisdom, mind-capacity, and tolerance are all inherent parts of our true self. If one has not yet reached the state of an awakened being, these qualities remain hidden. If compassion has not manifested, Wisdom has not opened, and the capacity of the heart has not expanded, it is difficult to broadly save all connected beings. This is because one has not yet saved oneself. If the beings within our bodies have not been resolved, or if we are currently in the midst of the manifestation of , how can we speak of saving others?
The Power of the Gate
In the practice of the Pure Land Dharma Gate, when our arises and we put it into action—acting according to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way—we will naturally receive the Buddha's . We will be protected by all Buddhas and supported by the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors. Within the Pure Land practice, the basic daily lessons are essential: prostrations to the Buddha, chanting Namo Amituofo, and reciting the Sutras. These are the virtuous methods for saving oneself and others, and for broadly saving all connected beings. Especially when we engage in group cultivation at the temple, the merit generated by the diligent practice of the community is immense. We must never underestimate or neglect the power of dedicating this merit.
The Profound Merit of Dedication
The merit we accumulate individually is small, but when we dedicate it through the words of the dedication verses, such as the phrase to adorn the Buddha's Pure Land, we are dedicating it to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. The merit obtained through this act is vast. In our dedication, we include all beings of the six paths, the Four Sacred Realms, and all sentient beings throughout the Dharma realm, including those in the ten directions and the dust-mote worlds. We dedicate merit to all spirits, including spirits of the land, mountains, water, fire, wind, and stone; the spirits of the foundation, the wandering spirits, and the spirits of nature; all flying, crawling, and creeping creatures; the spirits of grass, trees, flowers, rain, thunder, and lightning; and beings in the Yama realm and the three evil realms. By dedicating merit to these beings, we provide them with an opportunity to receive the benefits of the Dharma. This is the essence of broadly saving all connected beings. Furthermore, when we dedicate merit to the ancestors, parents, teachers, karmic creditors, and family members of all those participating in group cultivation—including the beings within our own bodies—we are offering them a chance to be saved.
