Cultivating the Wasteland into a Sacred Buddha-Land
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju

The Meaning of Cultivation
A wasteland is, by definition, a place where no one dwells. It is a space that may or may not be inhabited by earthly creatures. However, when people have a genuine need, they set out to cultivate this land, transforming it so that it may serve a higher purpose. A place that was once desolate and barren can be revitalised. This transformation occurs because there is a heart filled with vows, and because there is action born from those vows. When one lives according to these vows, the desolate land gradually becomes a place of great utility. The true value of this utility is revealed according to the depth of the practitioner's original vow.
The Humble Beginnings of Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre
Consider the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. In its early days, it was merely a piece of desolate land, overgrown with wild grass and weeds. It featured only a small, solitary white house where no master resided. Yet, because Practitioner Su encountered this place, everything changed. The trajectory of this land shifted in ways that defy ordinary explanation. Through the diligent Pure Land practice of Practitioner Su, and with the compassionate assistance of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, a profound transformation began to unfold.
The Power of Spiritual Deliverance
Through the practice of , many beings from the spiritual realms were helped to enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This process involved:
- Opening up space to allow for the liberation of trapped spirits.Performing acts of inconceivable merit that transcend ordinary logic.Taking on the suffering of sentient beings to alleviate their pain.Creating the conditions necessary for the teaching master of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, Namo Amituofo, to truly reside here.
Because of these efforts, the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre now stands firmly upon this earth. What was once a desolate, forgotten place has become a precious land where both the living and the spirits of the departed strive to reach. It is a sanctuary where they can find the path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
A Sanctuary for All Beings
All of this has come to pass because of faith in the Buddha, and because of the strength of vows put into action. The development of this centre into its current state was not easily achieved; it is a profound blessing for all sentient beings. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre serves as a vital bridge, connecting the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss with the world of sentient beings. It provides essential support to infinite beings, including those from the demon crowds, by helping them to:
- Cultivate their good roots.Accumulate and merit.Perfect their Causal Conditions.Successfully enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
This is truly an inconceivable achievement. The wasteland has been cultivated into a sacred Buddha-land, and it is here that the Buddha-heart, the Buddha-vow, and the Buddha-actions are clearly manifested for all to see. Namo Amituofo.
