Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.

On the twelfth of August, 2022, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered these profound insights on the nature of a truly expansive heart.

The Boundless Grace of an Open Heart

Greatness comes from inclusivity, and a face that is always smiling is the hallmark of Maitreya . This image manifests the boundless mind-capacity of the Buddha’s teachings. By maintaining a smile, one remains free from worry and attains true happiness. Those who are able to encompass and include all things are truly wise and virtuous; they are the ones whom all sentient beings are happy to draw near to and learn from.

Transcending the Veil of Discrimination

A practitioner must learn to accept and embrace others regardless of their circumstances. We should not discriminate based on external appearances, wealth, power, or social status. Whether one encounters the following, one must remain open:

  • The foolish, who have yet to understand the truth.
  • The wise, who offer guidance and clarity.
  • Those who are physically challenged or lacking in some way.
  • Those who are arrogant and self-important.

If we treat people differently based on these factors, we are not following the Buddha’s teachings. True practice requires us to see past these superficial differences to the inherent nature within all.

The Shadow of a Constricted Heart

Those who lack a heart of inclusivity easily fall into afflictions and anger. This negative state of mind invites spiritual attachments and to manifest in our lives. Consequently, the suffering of old age and illness will inevitably arise. However, we can avoid this suffering by choosing to open our mind-capacity.

Encompassing the Vastness of the Realm

We must learn to expand our hearts to encompass everything in existence. From the smallest dust particle or the invisible spirits in the air that our physical eyes cannot see, to the vast Dharma realm of emptiness—including this world and all other realms—all can be contained within our hearts. When we reach this state of mind, we are truly walking the right path. Namo Amituofo.
