Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

Namo Amituofo’s discourse:

The Essence of All Beings

In the Buddha’s teachings, we distinguish between two categories of beings that inhabit our universe. First, there are the sentient beings, which include humans, animals, insects, and all other forms of life that possess . Second, there are the insentient beings, which encompass the mountains, rivers, the vast earth, plants, trees, and even the minerals of our world.

However, when we look at the fundamental essence of these beings, we must realise that this distinction is merely a matter of form. In terms of their true nature, both sentient and insentient beings are equally considered beings, and both possess an inherent spirit. Every single being, without exception, possesses the original true self and the nature. Because of this, every being has the potential to attain Buddhahood, and their journey toward this goal unfolds according to their unique .

The Dance of Form and Function

To understand this more deeply, we must look at the three aspects of existence: the essence, the appearance, and the function. The essence is the true self and the Dharma nature, which is shared by all. The appearance is the diverse and unique form that each being manifests in this world. The function is the specific role or purpose that each being serves, which allows both sentient and insentient beings to coexist within the same space.

These beings exist in their own respective dimensions, yet they are deeply interconnected. Depending on their function, they may exist independently or in a state of mutual reliance. In this world, for example, sentient and insentient beings exist together, even though their outward appearances and their capabilities differ significantly. They are bound together in a complex web of existence.

Drifting in the Cycle of Rebirth

The worldly realm is a place where both sentient and insentient beings dwell together. Each is governed by the laws of karmic conditions and the causes and effects of their past actions. Because they are caught in the cycle of rebirth, they drift through the six realms of existence, living lives that are often dictated by their rather than their own conscious choice. They pass through one lifetime after another, often unaware of the path that could lead them to true liberation.
