The Nature of True Insight
Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe. On this day of the noon offering, we reflect upon the meaning of having a moment of . To have a moment of awakening refers to the state where, following a period of purification, one suddenly finds clarity in matters that were previously misunderstood. It is the sudden illumination of the heart where confusion is replaced by profound understanding.
Awakening is the primary indicator of progress in your practice of the Buddha . It can be observed within the , where areas that were once blocked or obscured suddenly clear, becoming smooth, bright, and luminous. This is the process of moving from small, continuous insights toward great awakening, and eventually, into the state of total, unobstructed wisdom.
The Transformation of
Throughout your many lives, your Alaya consciousness has accumulated various blockages and obscurations. When you experience a moment of awakening, it acts as a powerful and rapid force. This force clears the blockages within the Alaya consciousness, much like a warm current of light flowing through your entire being. In that singular moment, the Alaya consciousness reveals a vast expanse of light. This is the state of awakening, where the eight consciousnesses are transformed into wisdom. Specifically, the Alaya consciousness is transformed into the Great Perfect Mirror Wisdom, marking the time of awakening and seeing one's true nature.
Lessons from the Patriarchs
From ancient times until the present, the patriarchs and venerable masters have experienced awakening in diverse ways, each reflecting the unique conditions of their lives:
- Some have seen a cup shatter and suddenly realised the truth of impermanence, thereby breaking their attachments and seeing their true nature in a single moment of clarity.
- Others have observed the wind blowing leaves from the trees, realising that all things arise from the beginning of this connection and will eventually fade away when the conditions fade away, leading them to truly "see through" and "let go" of worldly concerns.
- Many have witnessed the reality of birth, aging, sickness, death, and through this, they have realised the suffering of being unable to take charge of their own lives. This realisation has inspired them to become fiercely diligent in their practice, ultimately leading them to see their true nature.
Living the Path of Awakening
The Alaya consciousness serves as the record of your spiritual life. It meticulously documents every action, thought, and intention you have held since beginningless time, recording every detail without a single omission. Therefore, your practice must be integrated into every aspect of your existence:
- In your daily activities—whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down—you must maintain a state of awakening. This means that 24/7, your every thought is focused on the Buddha, never departing from the presence of Namo Amituofo.
- When facing the changes of impermanence, you must find the moment of awakening by maintaining an ordinary, peaceful heart, for this is the true path.
- When confronted with the realities of birth, aging, sickness, death, you must recognise that the cycle of rebirth is a source of suffering. Seek liberation by diligently practising the path.
By chanting Namo Amituofo and making the sincere vow to enter the Western Pure Land, you will reach awakening and complete the path to Buddhahood. In doing so, your will manifest, allowing you to save infinite suffering beings. Namo Amituofo.
