Reflections on the Pure Land Path: A Letter from Lay Practitioner Huang Nianzu
The Fourth Letter of Lay Practitioner Huang Nianzu
A Message from the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss
A Life Dedicated to the
June 18, 2017. I, Huang Nianzu, look back upon my life and see a path that may appear complex to others, yet it was fundamentally simple. My entire existence was a journey toward one ultimate destination: returning to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Before reaching this point, I navigated through many experiences and trials. Ultimately, I found my refuge by the side of my teacher, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. His greatness was a beacon that guided me, and his influence deeply shaped my achievements in the Pure Land path. I would not dare to claim that I have reached full attainment, but I have certainly gathered some precious insights—the fruits of my devotion to the Pure Land.
The of Deep Study
The joy I found in studying the Buddha’s teachings was so immense that I could not stop. The mysteries hidden within the sutras ignited a deep desire within me to delve ever deeper into their meaning. I dedicated my life to the rigorous study of both large and small sutras and commentaries. My study was filled to the brim with books and sacred texts, and this was the way I most loved to spend my time. Looking back, my life of practice passed by with startling speed. I, Huang Nianzu, have completed my journey in this world, yet I must confess that for a time, I could not reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This was because my practice of chanting Namo Amituofo was not yet sufficiently powerful.
The Fragility of the Mind
It is truly humbling, and perhaps even humorous, to admit this. A small, sudden situation arose, and in that moment, I forgot to keep the Buddha-name in my heart. If you can truly understand the meaning behind what I am expressing, you will realise that chanting Namo Amituofo is not as easy as it may seem. Achieving a state of concentrated, uninterrupted is a significant distance away for many. Therefore, I must ask you: can you truly ensure your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss? Do not underestimate the power of the old masters, nor the sanctity of the .
A Call to the Wise
I, Huang Nianzu, express my position with absolute sincerity. I do not oppose your active study and propagation of the Dharma that you believe in, for it is a great path. However, I urge you to pause and reflect: can you truly walk this path all the way to the finish line? You are all intelligent people, and you are certainly not insignificant figures. I have shared these words here, and I await your arrival. I am in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, but please understand that only the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre possesses the unique capacity to connect with the Western Pure Land. Coming to seek me there will bring you no harm; it is an opportunity to study the Buddha’s teachings together and to deepen your practice of Namo Amituofo.
