The Foundation of a Settled Mind

Namo Amituofo teaches us that the ability to purify oneself is a clear indication that the heart has attained a state of meditative concentration. When your heart is truly settled, it remains undisturbed by the pollutions and interferences of the external world. Purification is the primary task of any practitioner; it is the essential process of cleansing the Buddha-land within your own heart.

How can you ensure that your heart remains settled and free from the influence of external contaminants? The path is clear for all Buddhist practitioners. You must diligently practise the Three Learnings of (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom, while working to extinguish the Three Poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance.

The Three Pillars of Spiritual Progress

The Three Learnings are the foundation of your spiritual progress. They function in a specific, harmonious way:

  • Precepts (Discipline): By upholding the Precepts, your heart finds peace and stability.
  • Concentration: Once the heart is stable, it can enter a state of deep meditative concentration.
  • Wisdom: Only when the mind is concentrated can true Wisdom be revealed, allowing you to see the Truth clearly.

Without the foundation of the Precepts, the heart remains restless and anxious. If you harbour fear, your mind cannot settle, and this state of agitation is, in itself, a form of spiritual pollution.

The Sacred Role of Precepts

The Precepts were transmitted by Shakyamuni Buddha and have been adapted across various dynasties to suit the specific environments and needs of practitioners in different eras. They serve as the essential framework for the management and conduct of the monastic community. It is necessary for monastics to uphold their respective vows—the Bhikshu Precepts for monks and the Bhikshuni Precepts for nuns.

The monastic community must maintain the purity of these Precepts to allow their true nature to manifest. As members of the Three Jewels, monastics carry the heavy responsibility of representing the and spreading the teachings to all beings. Consequently, the Precepts they uphold are more detailed and rigorous than the Five Precepts and Ten Good Deeds followed by lay practitioners. This strict adherence provides a clear guide for , mind, and spirit.

The Authority of the Precepts

Should a practitioner violate these Precepts, there are established methods and channels for correction and repentance. Upholding the Precepts is the cultivation of virtue; it is the fragrance of morality that assists in the advancement of your practice. Those who strictly observe the Precepts emit the fragrance of virtue, which is a testament to their inner purity.

The Three Platforms of Precepts are recognised by both the human world and the spiritual realms as the formal qualification of a monastic. The ordination certificate, issued by the national monastic management institution, serves as the official proof of one's identity as a monk or nun. The Bhikshu and Bhikshuni Precepts are the collective standards of conduct that all monastics must follow.

The Pure Environment of Hsiang Kuang

At the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, we are incredibly fortunate. Namo Amituofo truly abides here, and we are blessed with the guidance of Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju and the assistance of Practitioner Su, who helps all students in their practice. In our current situation, the temple rules are simple and easy to follow, representing a convenient path within the greater path of the Dharma.

You must be vigilant not to violate the Precepts. Doing so is the only way to avoid creating negative and to prevent the interference of spiritual attachment. By upholding the Precepts, you assist the monastic community in increasing their virtue and achieving their spiritual goals, bringing the day of ever closer. Practitioner Su possesses the ability to see clearly and to subdue negative influences, ensuring that the monastic community remains on the right path.

The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is like a forest of practice, a sanctuary for the soul. With the Precepts as your guide, the time for your Awakening will surely come. We call upon all monastics to follow the Bhikshu and Bhikshuni Precepts with sincerity. If you truly desire to achieve spiritual success, strict adherence to the Precepts will assist you in reaching the Buddha's path. Meanwhile, our lay practitioners and volunteers should continue to follow the Five Precepts and the Ten Good Deeds. Namo Amituofo.
