Stopping the Seeds of Negative Thought
An Interview with Venerable Chang Ren
Recorded by Chief Writer Shi Fajing on September 11, 2022
Venerable Chang Ren, a dedicated practitioner at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, shares profound insights on the necessity of mental discipline. This interview was recorded on September 11, 2022, by Chief Writer Shi Fajing, capturing the Venerable's guidance on maintaining a pure heart amidst the challenges of daily life.
Venerable Chang Ren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. When a small, negative thought arises, do not simply ignore it. You must acknowledge its presence and immediately teach yourself to transform it. If you do not, that thought will gradually grow. By the time it becomes large enough to influence your entire way of thinking, it will become incredibly difficult to subdue or control.
The Growth of a Negative Seed
Have you ever had this experience? A tiny, negative thought about someone quietly slips into your mind. But in the days that follow, it refuses to leave. It lingers, and worse, it begins to act like a guide, leading you to notice every other flaw that person might have. Consequently, you generate even more negative thoughts, and the cycle becomes nearly impossible to stop.
Why does this happen? It is because the thought of 'seeing the bad' is contagious. It spreads and interferes with your head—your mental clarity—at an astonishing speed. If you do not correct yourself immediately, if you do not actively teach yourself to see the good and think of the good, that negativity will eventually take control of your entire mind. Once it has taken root, it is extremely difficult to break free from its grip.
The Ripple Effect on Body and Spirit
Whenever a negative thought appears regarding any person or any situation, your heart will inevitably experience a disturbance. The only difference is the intensity of that fluctuation. These disturbances will certainly affect the purity of your body and mind. They create an environment where spiritual attachments increase, making you more susceptible to the interference of sentient beings. This, in turn, generates even more negative thoughts, causing your body and mind to become increasingly polluted.
Cultivating in the Fourfold Assembly
To all members of the fourfold assembly: when interacting with one another, you should always strive to see the good and think of the good. Regarding the mistakes, shortcomings, or flaws of others, you should face them with a heart of tolerance. Do not look at them with a critical eye, magnifying their faults or engaging in gossip. In the secular world, such behaviour might be common, but in the path of practice, these actions are significant obstacles. They cause you to lose your heart of compassion, your capacity for tolerance, and your inner purity.
On the path of practice, you must constantly observe your own heart and guard your mental notes. Doing so will help you elevate your spiritual state and allow you to experience the true of the during your practice.
Namo Amituofo."
