The Past and the Present
To clarify the heart, to polish the mirror of the mind, and to understand the truth—this is the essence of contemplation. When you begin to observe the most subtle of the subtle, you will start to see the remnants of your own discriminations and attachments. At the very beginning, these subtle movements of the mind are difficult to detect. However, the more you face yourself and the more you come to understand your own nature, the more you will recognise the various causes and sources that trigger your every thought and intention.
You must ask yourself: Is it truly necessary to be so concerned about this matter? Perhaps in your heart, it feels like a mere ripple, a light and passing thought. Yet, this subtle ripple is sufficient for other beings to sense your state of mind. The origin of these ripples is the heart itself. What you emit from within is not only received by the spirits residing within your own body, but it even permeates the entire Realm.
The most easily proven evidence of this is that as soon as a ripple is emitted, corresponding sentient beings can be drawn to you, leading to spiritual attachment. This occurs because your state of mind and their own inclinations are in sync. Many of the sentient beings that have been drawn to Lay Practitioner Li are here for this very reason. Everything happens so naturally, yet it is rooted in deep-seated habits:
How much deep thinking and calculation is required to maintain these various behaviours? Over time, the application of this thinking has transformed into a habitual pattern. This tendency to over-think is also closely linked to one's personality. Those who love to think are often more afraid of being hurt and are more sensitive to the external world. Consequently, they feel the need to use excessive thinking as a shield to protect themselves.
Without the guidance of the Buddha’s teachings, it is difficult to break free from this cycle. The greatest harm caused by this constant mental activity is to the physical body itself. Today, Lay Practitioner Li still needs to listen to more sutra lectures for guidance. He is very eager to understand the impurities within his own body and why he has been brought to the Dharma-Nature Land. This desire for intellectual clarity is his greatest habitual pattern of thinking. If he is not given a clear explanation, he becomes quite restless.
This restlessness is also a result of his upbringing, as he has been conditioned by Western education to believe that research and analysis are the natural ways to solve problems. Who would have thought that this very reliance on analysis has become his greatest obstacle? Sometimes, he even feels a sense of frustration when he observes the actions of his own body. This requires even more patient guidance to help him overcome these hurdles and facilitate a favourable opportunity for his progress.
At the very least, he now knows where the problem lies. By approaching this from multiple angles, things will eventually change. When one learns to let go of the constant need to analyse and instead turns to the practice of chanting , the mind will naturally settle. It is through this stillness that the true nature is revealed. We must encourage him to continue his practice with sincerity, for the path to is paved with the steady, quiet, and persistent effort of the heart. May all beings leave suffering behind and find happiness through the light of the Buddha’s wisdom.
