The Chains of Desire and the Path to Freedom
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
From the 2019 Taiwan and Hong Kong World Disaster Mitigation and Blessing Dharma Assembly

The Hungry Fire of Greed
At its core, desire is nothing more than the manifestation of greed. It is a hungry fire that consumes the spirit, driven by a heart that has forgotten how to be still. When we allow greed to take root within us, it acts as a tether, pulling our toward endless, insatiable cravings. In this world, many people have lost the ability to find contentment in the simple warmth of a meal or the basic necessities of life. They are constantly looking outward, always seeking something more, never pausing to appreciate the abundance they already possess.
How many can truly say they are satisfied with what they have? The heart remains restless, forever searching and forever demanding. When will this cycle finally cease? Only when the heart learns to settle into a state of true meditative concentration can we find the peace we so desperately seek.
The Restless Heart in Search of Peace
Desire is not merely a thought; it manifests in our physical and emotional states. If you wish to understand the depth of your own desires, observe the symptoms that arise within your body and mind:
- Unrest:
- A constant feeling that you are missing something or that you must be somewhere else.Panic:
- A deep-seated fear that you will lose what you have or fail to acquire what you want.Restlessness: An inability to sit quietly, as the mind is constantly pulled by external stimuli.
These states of being are the direct fruits of unchecked desire. If you wish to stabilise your heart and find true inner peace, you must be willing to confront the desires that dwell within you. Unravelling the knots of your own cravings is the most effective way to satisfy the heart. True satisfaction does not come from acquiring more; it comes from needing less.
to Your Own Power
When you find yourself overwhelmed by a multitude of desires, remember that you possess the power to wake up. You must be the one to choose to step out of the fog of craving. The strength to untie these knots comes from within you, and you must believe that you have the capacity to save yourself. The Buddha’s teachings are vast and profound; they act as a powerful, positive force in your life. However, you must study them diligently for them to become a reliable refuge.
You must learn to understand your own heart and exercise self-discipline. Do not allow desire to consume you. Any form of deluded thinking carries within it the power of destruction, and it is all too easy to become lost in these patterns or to develop unhealthy addictions. My child, ask yourself: is your heart still clear and bright? Do you know what you are truly pursuing, and more importantly, do you understand why you are pursuing it?
The Compassionate Guidance of the Buddha
In this world, what is it that you desire most? Have you truly attained it? And even if you have, is it truly worth the price you have paid in peace and clarity? I am waiting for you to reach that moment of awakening, that moment when your heart becomes cool, calm, and collected. When you finally let go of these heavy desires, you will find the freedom that has been waiting for you all along.
The path to liberation is open to all who are willing to walk it with sincerity. By practising the Buddha’s teachings, you transform your life from one of confusion to awakening, from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity. Let go of the burdens that weigh you down, and you will find that the happiness you were searching for was within your own true nature all along.
