The Essence of the Cool Mind

The term 'Cool Mind' refers to a state of profound purity and refreshing clarity. It is not merely a fleeting emotion, but a natural phenomenon that manifests when a practitioner has undergone deep purification and realised their true nature. When one attains this state, the inner heart remains perpetually pure, stable, and cool. It is a state free from agitation, heat, or the burning afflictions that plague the ordinary mind.

An Unshakeable Inner Sanctuary

This natural state of the Cool Mind is entirely unaffected by the external environment. Whether one is surrounded by the influence of , attached spirits, or the interference of demon crowds, the inner sanctuary of the practitioner remains undisturbed. Because the mind is anchored in the Truth, it does not succumb to the turbulence of the cycle of rebirth. It is a state of absolute stability, where one is no longer swayed by the chaotic winds of the world.

The Solitary Journey of Life

Life in this world is brief, and the journey of existence is one that each individual must walk alone. How one manages to attain this state of Cool Mind depends entirely on the depth of their own practice. No one can replace you in this effort, and no one can bear the weight of your for you. As the saying goes, we come into this world alone, and we depart alone. If a practitioner can truly realise the gravity of this truth, they will understand the terrifying and painful nature of impermanence—the reality of aging, sickness, and death. With this realisation, one can rouse the spirit to practise with diligence and fervour, eventually finding the way back to their original nature and attaining the Cool Mind.

Transcending the Five Turbidities

The Cool Mind is the natural state of one who has achieved success in their meditative concentration and realised their true nature. It is the ability to remain untouched by the Five Turbidities that define this defiled and evil world of suffering:

  • The Kalpa Turbidity: The era of decline and chaos.
  • The View Turbidity: The prevalence of distorted and incorrect .
  • The Affliction Turbidity: The overwhelming presence of the .
  • The Being Turbidity: The collective suffering and confusion of sentient beings.
  • The Life Turbidity: The brevity, pain, and instability of human existence.

By possessing the Cool Mind, a practitioner can maintain the purity of their body, mind, and spirit even amidst the most difficult circumstances. Only in this state of inner coolness can one truly perform the work of saving beings with genuine efficacy.

Cultivating Wisdom Through Discipline

Practitioners are encouraged to engage in constant self-reflection. In your daily interactions with other beings, ask yourself: are you able to remain free from the pull of karma? Can you remain unswayed by the interference of karmic creditors, attached spirits, or demon crowds? Even when you face such interference, can you still uphold the , maintain a regular schedule, and ensure your daily practice remains uninterrupted? If you can achieve this, it is a sign that your meditative concentration is manifesting, which in turn allows your innate Wisdom to shine forth.

The Shortcut to

All those who practise the path should understand clearly that through the Buddha's , we have access to the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom. By engaging in these practices, you can dissolve your karma rapidly:

  • Prostrations: Bowing to the Buddha to humble the ego.
  • Chanting Buddha's name: Reciting the name to focus the mind and connect with the Buddha.
  • Recite the Sutras: Studying the teachings to deepen your understanding of the Truth.

This is the supreme shortcut to Awakening and ensuring your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Every practitioner should cherish and make full use of these precious tools.
