Reflections on Family Tragedy and the Nature of the Soul

This is a record of an interview with the spirit of Mr. Guan Jun, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the . This account reflects upon his life and the karmic origins of his family's suffering. Recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe, on September 24, 2018.

Mr. Guan Jun speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. I am deeply grateful to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su for giving me this opportunity to speak about the tragedy that befell my family and the state of my three hun souls and seven po souls.

Four years ago, the series of events that struck my family in Hong Kong was a devastating blow. Within a short period, the men in my family passed away one after another: first my eldest son, Guan Youxing, then myself, and finally my youngest son, Guan Wenhui. Two of my sons are still alive, but one of them suffers from severe mental instability. It is truly a great misfortune for our family line.

A Glimpse of the Western Pure Land

Thanks to the life-saving grace of Practitioner Su, who rescued me from the hells and brought me to the Western -Nature Land at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to listen to the teachings, I have finally come to understand many truths. I had never heard such teachings before. I now know of Namo Amituofo and the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This beautiful, blissful world is worlds apart from the hypocrisy, deception, and anxiety of the human world, where people spend money in a desperate search for peace of mind.

I repent deeply. I now realise that I had so many from my past lives, and combined with my killing of animals for food in this lifetime, I truly did not know how to repay such a debt! I can only beg my living family members to help me by performing Chao Du for my parents, teachers, and karmic creditors from countless eons past. Only at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, where Namo Amituofo abides, can sentient beings be truly delivered to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. It was Practitioner Su who guided me to the West during a .

The Weight of Collective

Why did my family encounter such misfortune? When I look back at the past, I am shocked—the laws of karma and cause and effect are truly terrifying! It turns out that my entire family shared a collective karma. My wife, Cen Xingying, our children, and our grandchildren were all controlled by a powerful curse cast by enemies from our past lives. Eleven generations ago, we were high-ranking government officials. I was the mastermind behind a plot to invade a key military stronghold of a neighbouring nation. To ensure our success, I ordered a spell to be cast that rendered their generals, soldiers, and even civilians unconscious and powerless, forcing them to surrender without a fight. We turned them into prisoners, executed their king and generals, and annexed their land into our own territory.

The victims were filled with resentment. The sorcerer who cast the spell used his own life force, bleeding onto the talisman and chanting curses until he died from blood loss. Because of this, the curse carries a potent energy of death. In a later lifetime, when the mastermind and the participants were reincarnated into the same family, they were destined to die one by one. The curse began to take effect when I fell ill and passed away. Each death carries the same intensity, and the spell will only lose its power once everyone bound by it has perished. The curse is still active, which means other family members are still in danger!

A Warning for the Living

Speaking of this makes my scalp tingle. There are still family members who are destined to suffer! Who are they? Those who are mentally unstable! They are covered by the invisible curses of the spell, leading to erratic speech and behaviour, and a loss of self-control. They will eventually die in an accident, a sudden illness, or perhaps even by suicide.

Heavens! How could this happen? The meaning is clear: the next victim will be another son of the Guan family! There is also a granddaughter currently undergoing purification and practice at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. What can be done? Now that I know this, I must do everything in my power to stop it. But how can I, from the Western Land, resolve this catastrophe? I was ignorant before, and we have already lost three lives; we cannot afford to lose any more. Although everyone must eventually die, they should not die while trapped under the influence of such a curse. I beg Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su to save the Guan family. Please, save my family!

I can see now that besides my granddaughter, there is also a grandson. My heavens! If my grandson continues to stay abroad, he might follow in his uncle's footsteps, suffer mental instability, and fall victim to this curse. Thankfully, they are both currently undergoing purification and practice at the temple.

The Necessity of

The members of the Guan family must awaken. The pain of the past is surely still fresh in everyone's memory. I am old, and my death is of little consequence, but my sons and grandchildren have their own futures. We must avoid further regrets. If spending money can avert disaster, then there is still hope. The real fear is that money cannot stop the disaster, and more lives will be lost, or there will be no one left to help. The problem is right in front of us; whether it is Chao Du or Generosity, it must be done. Do not let subjective opinions or doubts cause you to miss the opportunity to avert disaster and save lives.

However, I am no longer in the human world, and I do not know if anyone will listen to my words. It is no wonder that Guan Youxing could not leave; he remains at the Western Dharma-Nature Land at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. He likely knew that the two children would be in danger, which is why he urged them to stay at the temple—it is the safest place. How many people would believe these things if I told them? But the Guan family must believe. In this situation, only Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su can save us. The family must help and work together to resolve this calamity so that they can live in peace.

The Three Hun Souls and Seven Po Souls

Throughout my life, I experienced the ups and downs of the world—the bitterness and the sweetness. I worked hard in my youth, built my business in my prime, and achieved fame in the construction industry, fulfilling my dream of standing out. In my old age, I had everything, yet I was plagued by illness, constantly travelling between home and the hospital until I finally passed away, ending my life.

My four sons and one daughter once brought laughter and glory to our home. I invested heavily in sending them abroad for their education, just as I had invested in the construction industry. I knew that in the society to come, one needed academic qualifications, wealth, and power to establish a firm footing. This is a society full of competition and comparison. I believed that a good education would give them a head start. This prevailing social mindset is one of the reasons my children are now in crisis; it has caused them to have narrow hearts, a competitive nature, unhappiness, and a tendency to get stuck in dead ends.

Regarding my three hun souls and seven po souls: if someone had told me about these things in the past, I might have listened on the surface, but it would not have been easy for me to truly believe. Now that I am in the West, Practitioner Su asked me to check if my souls were taken away while I was alive. I will report what I saw: while I was alive, my three hun souls and seven po souls were indeed captured by karmic creditors! My body was also occupied by these creditors and spiritual attachments.

The Fragmentation of the Soul

I was a man of strong opinions and views. I was busy expanding my business, and inevitably, I spent much time in famous restaurants and hotels, drinking and laughing with clients. As a result, two of my po souls were left at dining tables, negotiating business deals.

When I was about fifty-eight, one hun soul saw in a dream that my body had suddenly collapsed in the office with no one to help. That soul entered the dream to save me, but once it entered my body, it also lost . After waking up, I would occasionally experience moments of distraction, where my spirit felt scattered and unfocused, though I would recover after a short time.

I rarely participated in my children's homework, but I attached great importance to their school grades. One po soul remained at the desk at home, watching over their studies and results. Another po soul stayed at my office desk, diligently reviewing meeting materials and planning architectural blueprints. I never dared to be negligent in these matters; I was always strict and demanding.

In my later years, due to illness, I sometimes found it hard to concentrate, feeling exhausted one moment and energetic the next. I could not help but sigh; when you get old, your body is no longer under your control. There is a sense of powerlessness that is hard to resist. Although I disliked taking medicine, I had to rely on it to control my bodily functions. Thus, one po soul remained in the hospital, undergoing examinations and lying in a hospital bed, waiting for others to care for me.

The Illusion of Control

My main spirit seemed to remain clearly in my body, aware of many changes, hearing and seeing everything, and receiving information from all sides. But towards the end, it seemed to become dull, and my reactions slowed. It turns out that the state of drives the scattering of the soul. Another hun soul frequently travelled between the hells and my home. After I fell asleep at night, my soul would be dragged into the hells. Alas, I was truly useless; I had no power to resist. Because I was human in this life, my past wrongdoings were easily discovered. As soon as I had a thought or intention, the beings in the hells could find me. All sorts of beings—not people I knew in this life—would point out exactly what I had done. When I was in the hells, I could remember those past deeds, but as soon as my soul returned to the human world, I would forget everything. Now, I truly feel that my life in the human world was like a dream, and reporting to the hells was like a dream within a dream.

Until my life force gradually faded and I could no longer fight the illness, my human lifespan came to an end. My soul emerged, entered the hells for interrogation, and began to suffer and repay my debts. I had heard of karmic creditors while I was alive, but I never imagined they were so close to me. What I owed others in past lives, they came to collect in this life—these are karmic creditors. My creditors covered my entire body: from my scalp, eyes, mouth, nose, limbs, chest, lungs, and heart, to my internal organs and even my pores. My body was like a republic.

When I was in good spirits and had enough energy to be autonomous and live normally, they remained still, appearing only as grey, dark shadows, not very noticeable. But when I had more things to face and handle, as soon as I used my brain to think, a group of shadows would appear in my head, turning into black clusters that floated about, as if they were thinking along with me. When I relaxed my head and stopped thinking about anything, they would disperse.

The Influence of Sentient Beings

So, these beings follow me; whatever I do, they do. If that is the case, when I made decisions, plans, or held opinions, were they truly my own, or did they include the intentions of these beings? If they included their intentions, then when I was angry, unhappy, stubborn, decisive, or even scolded others, was it really me? Or was it a reaction amplified by the emotions and habits of these beings? Yes, it was the reaction of beings with the same personality and habits.

How did things become so complicated? If someone's personality or temper changes and they become unlike their original self, it is because these beings are in control—speaking, making expressions, responding, eating, and sleeping for you. My son, Guan Youwen, is like this! He was fine, but then he became another person; it is no longer him! His mental abnormality is because other beings are in his body, using it. What is their relationship with him? Why treat him this way? Is there some deep hatred? Can it be resolved? His three hun souls and seven po souls must not be in his body, which is why he is controlled. Where are they? If we invite his souls back, can he return to normal? But who has the ability to invite his souls back? Practitioner Su! I have seen Practitioner Su invite souls back into the body and deliver the relevant karmic creditors. Of course, one must also change one's own personality and habits so the souls do not leave the body again. Both must be done to be effective. If so, Guan Youwen can be saved! Let him come to see Practitioner Su quickly. With Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, I believe Practitioner Su can save him. I pray to the Buddha for , let Guan Youwen come to the temple! His curse must be broken, and only the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre can help him!

The Nature of Spiritual Attachment

My karmic creditors entered my body one after another. When I was thirty-eight, forty-five, and sixty-eight, large groups entered my head and limbs, making my movements slower and slower until I could not walk. Some were in my chest, making it hard to breathe, and some flowed in my blood. When I had blood drawn, I saw some beings being drawn out with the blood. In that case, the blood test results would be abnormal. It turns out that the interference of these beings can affect medical results, causing abnormal reports. It is truly terrifying! These beings are everywhere. There are beings outside the body and beings inside the body. The beings inside are called karmic creditors; if the beings outside enter the body, they are called spiritual attachments. I finally understand!

After I died, they did not die, and they will not die, because they are spirits. When they left my body, some looked like light mist, some floated out individually, and some came out in groups before departing. At that point, my body had nothing to do with them. It turns out they wanted revenge, acting according to the situation, step by step making my body age, become ill, and suffer, then controlling me, disrupting my life, making me suffer through medical treatments, and then causing my death. Then they left one by one, ending their revenge. My body was ruined, and without a body, only my soul left to enter the hells to suffer torture for the wrongdoings of my past and present lives. This includes the wrongdoings I committed while controlled by these beings in this life; I am responsible for this karma too. Looking at it this way, being human is truly useless!

The main controller in my body was a subordinate from eight lives ago. Because of my selfishness, I framed him for treason, and he was executed. His family was also implicated and killed. He was filled with resentment and finally waited for this life to take revenge.

The other main controller was the deadly curse from eleven generations ago. The curse existed in my heart, causing chest tightness, heart pain, and the chronic illnesses that led to my death. Some of the curse existed in my head, and some in my heart. If the curse exists in the head, it leads to mental abnormality. I never expected that after eleven generations, the curse would still be effective. It is truly terrifying!

I am grateful to Namo Amituofo. I am grateful to Practitioner Su for giving me the opportunity to see this tragedy of the Guan family. I repent and apologise here for the cruel and inhumane wrongdoings I committed. I beg for the forgiveness of these beings. I hope there is a chance to resolve this, and I ask for the help of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su.

Interview with the Main Controller

Sentient Being: I am the main controller who was in Guan Jun's body while he was alive. My name is Pang Juanrong. I was framed for treason and executed, and my family was implicated and killed—one hundred and sixty-three lives vanished in the human world. How could I not seek revenge for this debt? So many lives, and only Guan Jun's life to repay it—it is too easy for him! We entered his blood when he was thirty-six. The curse in his heart was activated, and because of the power of the curse, we woke up, so we did not need to exert much effort to make him suffer. We did nothing excessive or wrong. Now I am in the ghost realm, still a ghost.

Venerable HaiZe: Do you have the willingness to accept Chao Du?

Sentient Being: Guan Jun attended Dharma assemblies while he was alive, and his family would spend money to write names on memorial tablets at these assemblies to avert disaster and perform Chao Du for other family members. But for us, it was painless and ineffective. We would just go and look, eat a little, and when we left his body, his body would naturally feel a bit better, more comfortable, and he could take fewer pills. They thought it was effective, but in reality, we would just go back into his body, and the problem remained the same. This is treating the symptoms but not the root cause.

However, the Chao Du at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is different. The Chao Du here is very famous in the underworld because we have the opportunity to leave the ghost realm and be truly delivered to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. That is why I came here to be interviewed. If it were ordinary Chao Du, we would not be delivered, and I would not need to come here. We are willing to accept Chao Du. Can it include other beings of the same period who were in his body? We are all in the same boat.

Venerable HaiZe: The Buddha is compassionate; Practitioner Su will help everyone.

Memorial Tablet: For those connected to Guan Jun:

  • 1. The subordinate from a past life who was framed for treason and executed, along with 163 family members who were implicated and killed. Representative: Pang Juanrong.
  • 2. The spirits and sentient beings connected to Guan Jun while he was alive may be delivered. No count, no names.

(Entering the Western Dharma-Nature Land at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre)

Venerable HaiZe: May I ask about the deadly curse from eleven generations ago that existed in the hearts or heads of the Guan family members? Is the sorcerer or the curse still present?

Sentient Being: Ha! Ha! Ha! The deep hatred of having one's country and family destroyed—no matter how many lifetimes pass, the power of the curse will remain. It is not something that can be stopped by fighting us head-on. It is already in them; this is the natural effect. They deserve their fate.

Venerable HaiZe: It is so painful! Waiting for eleven generations! The Buddha wants to save you. Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su can help you return to the past, to the time when the country, home, king, generals, and civilians were all there. I hope you can resolve this.

Sentient Being: Let's see if you can actually do it. How can what is already dead be restored?

Venerable HaiZe: Namo Amituofo wants to save people; the power of the Buddha's teachings is boundless! May I ask who you are currently in, that you can exchange messages with us? Are you in Guan Jun's son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, or in Guan Fengxia or Guan Tongming?

Sentient Being: You can receive messages this way, so I can naturally send messages from where I am for you to receive. We are a trinity; no matter who we are in, unless their physical body dies, the curse will remain effective. Once those who are destined to die have died, it will naturally lose its effect. The people here have great merit, and the effect of the curse has been halted, but if their hearts are not upright and they still hold worldly desires, the curse will still take effect.

Venerable HaiZe: May I ask if there are others besides those three?

Sentient Being: The secrets of heaven cannot be revealed.

Venerable HaiZe: Namo Amituofo. (The sentient being provides no further message.)
