Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded by Venerable HaiZe during the noon offering on the eighth of June, 2024.

The Meaning of a Half-Baked Practice

What does it mean to be a half-baked practitioner? It is a state of inconsistency that prevents the heart from truly settling into the path of the Buddha. When you are half-baked, your practice is not a continuous stream of devotion, but rather a series of fragmented efforts that are easily disrupted by the world around you.

The Fluctuations of Daily Devotion

This inconsistency manifests in the three primary pillars of your daily practice:

  • Chanting the Buddha-name: At times, you chant with deep focus, and your heart is filled with . However, at other times, your chanting is interrupted. You allow yourself to be pulled away by external environments or distracting sounds. You find it difficult to maintain the flow, and you may even fall into a state of being drowsy or drift into other spaces.
  • Prostrations: Sometimes, every is accompanied by the Buddha-name. Your body feels supple, and your expression is gentle and calm. Yet, at other times, your heart is empty of the Buddha. The Buddha-name is absent, and you perform prostrations in a state of being drowsy, entering other spaces and struggling to wake yourself up.
  • Reciting the Sutras: You know that you should recite the Sutras clearly, word by word, moving forward with a steady heart. In a state of being pure, you naturally uphold the Discipline (), cultivate meditative concentration, and gain wisdom, which allows you to understand the profound meaning of the Sutras. However, you often find that your mind is not settled. Delusions and messy thoughts arise, leading to being drowsy and the manifestation of other spaces.

The Perils of a Wandering Mind

The conditions described above are the hallmarks of a half-baked practitioner. If your practice remains in this state, it is very difficult to achieve any real spiritual success. Furthermore, it becomes nearly impossible to rely on your chanting to secure rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. Life is finite, and the time we have is precious. If you have not yet reached the stage of an awakened being who can depart this world with total freedom, you must rely on chanting the Buddha-name to be led by to the Western Pure Land.

Preparing for the Final Journey

If you maintain this half-baked state in your daily life, what will happen when the great limit of life arrives? When the moment of death approaches, those who have not established firm meditative concentration through their chanting will be filled with fear and anxiety. At that critical juncture, your spirit will follow the direction of your thoughts. It is difficult to know which path you will take, and if you fall into the Three Evil Realms, it would be a profound tragedy. You have been fortunate enough to encounter the Buddha, the teachings, and the guidance of Practitioner Su; to waste this magnificent Dharma affinity would be a loss beyond measure.

The Compassionate Rescue of Practitioner Su

Fortunately, Practitioner Su possesses a that is able to seek out and retrieve spirits. He sends them into the Western Land of Dharma Nature, helping all those connected by karmic affinity to enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is the current situation, but what of the future? I hope that all of you will strive to be diligent and achieve success in your practice. By doing so, you will be able to save yourselves and save other beings, guiding them all to the Western Pure Land.
