The Dignity of the Dharma Assembly: An Interview with Sangharama Bodhisattva
An Interview with Sangharama Bodhisattva
Recorded on 13 December 2020
The Guardians of the Sacred Space
To maintain the dignity and solemnity of the assembly, Sangharama and Skanda Bodhisattva stand guard on either side. They maintain a posture of majestic authority, encouraging all participants to uphold order and respect. Sangharama Bodhisattva holds his crescent-moon blade in his right hand, while his left hand is formed into a fist, resting gently by his waist. He stands perfectly upright, a figure of unwavering strength. Indeed, when the assembly begins the circumambulation of the Buddha, every participant feels a sense of profound reverence, moving with caution and sincerity, not daring to act out of turn.
At the centre of this assembly stands Practitioner Su. His is vast and immeasurable, a presence that commands the deepest respect from the countless sentient beings gathered there. Practitioner Su has manifested in countless billions of forms, leading his Buddha-recitation teams across Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Japan, and Australia. He travels to these diverse regions to perform , and in times of drought, he also conducts Buddha-recitation to bring forth the rain.
The Boundless of Practitioner Su
Wherever the countless manifestations of Practitioner Su go, sentient beings follow, chanting the name of Namo Amituofo. Bathed in the Buddha-light, each of these beings becomes filled with energy and clarity. When the Buddha-name resounds during the circumambulation, the six-character name vibrates through the entire space, dissolving all boundaries and layers. In every corner of this space, the sentient beings follow the order, circling the Buddha with single-minded devotion. They arrive before the Buddha, receive the illumination of the Buddha-light, and with a sincere heart, they follow the Buddha to be led to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Sangharama Bodhisattva observes as batch after batch of sentient beings are led away to the Western Land. The lead of this assembly is Namo Amituofo himself, and through the guidance of Practitioner Su’s Dharma Body, immeasurable and boundless beings are granted this rare and magnificent Causal Condition to enter the Western Land. During the assembly, Practitioner Su completely lets go of . He has only one purpose: to save the world, to perform Chao Du, and to bring relief to all. He allows his own body to be subjected to the intrusion of sentient beings, placing his own well-being entirely aside. I have witnessed these sentient beings chanting the name of Namo Amituofo, seeking rebirth in the Western Land. This is a scene without precedent; I have never seen so many immeasurable and boundless sentient beings seeking Chao Du, nor have I ever seen anyone as skilled in the art of Chao Du as Practitioner Su. I can only offer my deepest praise.
The Purification of
To protect Practitioner Su from the intrusion of these sentient beings, Sangharama Bodhisattva and Skanda Bodhisattva stand guard at his side, never allowing any sentient being to come too close. At present, we continue to use a vacuum-like method to purify every cell within Practitioner Su’s body. The space within these cells is incredibly deep, yet we must constantly counsel the sentient beings to depart quickly. Some sentient beings, aware of the suffering Practitioner Su endures, rise from the depths of the cells, allowing us to easily extract them. During this process of cellular purification, those who have listened to the sutras for a longer time are the first to emerge. They often take the initiative to help counsel the other sentient beings within the same cell, urging them to come out quickly, to cease their interference, and to go to the Dharma-Nature Land to listen to the teachings.
In order to perform Chao Du for these beings, Practitioner Su must, in every visualization, take on the suffering of sentient beings. He understands that this physical body is merely a tool borrowed in this life to achieve an awakened being through practice. Only by letting go of the physical body and changing one’s personality traits can one truly achieve success.
The Path to Rebirth
Every sentient being is a Buddha in essence. The mind-capacity of Practitioner Su is such that he does not abandon a single being. To be reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, one must possess three essential qualities:
- Good Roots: The foundation of faith and virtue planted in past lives.
- : The merit accumulated through virtuous actions and practice.
- Causal Conditions: The opportunity to encounter the Dharma and receive guidance.
If one has the assistance of a guide like Practitioner Su, who possesses the power of the Dharma Body to lead the way, one can surely reach the Western Land. Every day, as I listen to Practitioner Su chant the name of Namo Amituofo, I see and hear only the actions of a Buddha. The compassionate vows of Practitioner Su are manifested through his own body. He demonstrates the four virtues that all later learners should strive to emulate:
- Adapting to Causal Conditions with Skillful Means: Using the right method at the right time.
- Dignity and Order: Maintaining a presence that inspires respect and discipline.
- Gentleness and Sincerity: A heart that is soft, kind, and straightforward.
- Taking on the Suffering of Beings: A selfless commitment to the liberation of others.
Namo Amituofo.
