The Duality of the Heart: Choosing Between Buddha and Demon

The Boundless Essence of the Heart

The heart is an abstract concept, yet it serves as the primordial origin from which all phenomena arise. Should we endeavour to capture the essence of the heart through the limitations of language, we inevitably constrain its vast and boundless nature within the confines of mere words. Yet, to speak of it without the aid of language renders it elusive to the common understanding. Let us, therefore, contemplate an analogy to illuminate this truth.

Imagine a heart that is utterly empty, a void of pure clarity. It is transparent, devoid of even the slightest speck of dust or the faintest shadow of defilement. In this pristine state, the heart is perfectly luminous and clear, possessing an all-encompassing awareness and an infinite capacity for action. This is the state of one who has realised one's true nature and attained Buddhahood. When your heart is in perfect resonance with the Buddha, it is known as the Buddha-heart.

The Veils of Darkness and the Demon-heart

Conversely, the heart may also be shrouded in the darkness of ignorance. It can be clouded by negative states that lead us astray from our true nature: resentment, which festers like a poison; dissatisfaction, which breeds a restless and ungrateful spirit; and the indulgence in evil thoughts, evil actions, and evil speech. When we dwell in such states, we are manifesting the nature of a demon. When your heart is in resonance with the demon, it is known as the demon-heart.

The Sovereign Power of a Single Thought

Your heart possesses the sovereign power to guide you toward either the path of Buddhahood or the path of the demon. You are the master of your own destiny. With but a single shift in your mental note, you can alter the entire trajectory of your existence. This transformation is not a trivial matter; it carries a profound and formidable power. A heart that is firmly anchored in the good can even transmute the demon into a Buddha.

Ultimately, the choice rests solely with you. Which heart will you cultivate in this very moment? Will you nurture the Buddha-heart, or will you allow the demon-heart to take root? This is the most significant decision you will ever face. This message was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
