The Essence of True Practice
An Interview with the First Patriarch of the Huayan School, Venerable Dushun
Recorded on August 28, 2018, at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre
Venerable Dushun, the First Patriarch of the Huayan School, sought deliverance through the compassionate guidance of Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. This interview, which captures his profound insights on the nature of true practice and the salvation of sentient beings, was recorded on August 28, 2018.
Venerable Dushun speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. It is a rare and precious opportunity to possess a human body and to encounter the profound teachings of the Buddha. In this worldly realm, those who possess the and the causal conditions to hear the teachings are truly fortunate. Here at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, Practitioner Su is walking the path of with unwavering resolve. His for saving sentient beings never ceases for a single moment. Every day, he proceeds with the utmost caution and diligence, engaging in walking meditation and chanting the Buddha-name. His manifests in countless billions of forms to deliver immeasurable and boundless suffering beings. One might wonder, why does Practitioner Su possess such immense energy and compassion? It is because he truly understands the suffering of all beings; he feels their pain as if it were his own, and this empathy drives his tireless efforts to provide salvation."
The Rarity of the Human Body and the
"Many people in this world study Buddhism merely out of superstition, without ever truly grasping the underlying truth. They fail to let go of fame, wealth, the , and . True practice is simple: it is about diligent effort, step by step, with a grounded and honest heart. It is about cultivating the mind-capacity of a Buddha—the Buddha-heart, the Buddha-vow, and the Buddha-actions. To truly practise is to strip away the illusions of . One must realise that this life is an illusion; all things are empty and transient. There is no need for attachment. As the Huayan Four Virtues state: act according to conditions with wondrous utility, maintain dignified conduct, be gentle and straightforward, and take on the suffering of sentient beings. No matter how many sutras one reads, if one does not actually change their habits and personality, it remains nothing more than empty words and academic study. Accumulating Buddhist terminology only serves as an obstacle to realising one's true nature."
The Compassionate Work at Hsiang Kuang
"Practitioners at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre are the most blessed. Under the guidance of Practitioner Su, through his Dharma talks and teachings, they come to understand the principles of the universe and the vital importance of chanting the Buddha-name. The six-character name, Namo Amituofo, has become the sacred title chanted during daily walking meditation, a practice that transcends time and space. Practitioner Su leads the community, along with the Venerables and external Bodhisattvas from across the cosmos, in chanting Namo Amituofo together. They pierce through the dimensions, the spirits within the Milky Way one by one, guiding them to chant the Buddha-name and achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss."
A Spiritual Guardian for the World
"I have been accompanying the Chairman of China, observing the immense pressure he faces and the relentless busyness of his daily life. I constantly remind him of the importance of the Buddha-name, which has finally helped to stabilise his character, allowing him to handle public affairs with a calm mind. This, too, is due to the compassion of Practitioner Su, who requested that I protect him. It is a great blessing for the Chinese people to have such a virtuous being who has cultivated deeply in the past. I continue to remind the Chairman every day that the most important task is to return to the ranks of saviors under the guidance of Namo Amituofo."
Disciple Hailiang: "I am deeply grateful for the compassion of Venerable Dushun. Namo Amituofo."
