The Foundation of Faith: A Path to Awakening
Words of Namo Amituofo as Recorded by Venerable HaiZe

The Unshakable Foundation of Faith
Namo Amituofo teaches us that faith is the source of the Way and the mother of all merit. It is the foundation that nourishes all good roots within us. When you embark on the path of learning the Buddha’s teachings and engaging in practice, faith in the Buddha is the most vital priority. Without this firm foundation, everything you learn is like a castle built upon sand. No matter how grand or sturdy you believe that castle to be, when the ocean tides of life arrive and the waves of crash against it, it will be reduced to flat ground in an instant. It is, as we say, unable to withstand a single blow.
Navigating the Tides of Karmic Trials
The journey of Buddhist practice requires you to withstand the tests of diligent practice. This diligent practice is a crucial condition for achieving spiritual success. However, during your efforts, your past karma will inevitably manifest. When this happens, you must be prepared to accept the changes and the suffering that arise within your body, mind, and spirit. If you are a wise person, you will remain steadfast and continue your diligent practice without wavering. By relying on your faith in the Buddha, combined with your own perseverance and endurance, you will receive the support of the Buddha’s power. This is how you will surely overcome the trials presented by your karma.
The Six Perfections as a Radiant Shield
In the Six Perfections—Generosity, Discipline, Patience, Diligent Practice, Meditation, and Wisdom—we find the tools necessary to navigate these challenges. Each of these practices serves as a key to facing and passing the tests when karma manifests. For instance, when greed arises, it is most likely to lead you into the hells created by the five roots of wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep. When we give lectures and teach the Buddha’s teachings, we must constantly remind the fourfold assembly of this danger. These five items encompass the greed that causes suffering in the hells, and maintaining Discipline is the most effective remedy to counteract Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt.
The Inconceivable Power of the Sacred Name
When you single-mindedly chant the name of Namo Amituofo, you are simultaneously practising all Six Perfections. This is the inconceivable power of the Buddha-name. Karma is like a time bomb or a landmine hidden beneath the surface of your daily life. The Buddha’s teachings are designed to guide you and all Buddhist practitioners on how to avoid triggering these evil thoughts, how to avoid detonating these hidden bombs, and how to avoid stepping on these karmic landmines.
The Vigilance of a Pure Heart
Often, when karma manifests, those who are not firm in their Discipline may find themselves breaking the . For example, regarding the precept of lust, even a single thought or intention is considered a violation, let alone the actual physical actions or speech that might follow. Once you trigger these karmic seeds, when will they explode and cause you harm? It could happen at any moment, or it could remain hidden and manifest unexpectedly. Such occurrences are a great injury to the purity of your body, mind, and spirit. Therefore, you must be extremely careful. Do not underestimate any small or unintentional thought, for any one of them could become the detonator that leads to a violation of the Precepts.
Walking the Path Toward True
If you are a person of faith who believes deeply in the words of , you will not dare to transgress. Through diligent practice, you will easily achieve success. Maintaining Discipline and engaging in diligent practice are excellent methods for purification. Because you are not being polluted by new negative actions, you are able to dilute and wash away the stains of the karma created in the past. If you can truly experience the various benefits of maintaining the Precepts and practise them with diligence, your spiritual journey will surely progress.
Those who believe in the Buddha and follow the teachings found in the sutras are walking in the footsteps of the Buddha. In the context of the , you will certainly receive the support of Amitabha Buddha. The process of realising one's true nature and attaining Buddhahood is the path, and after achieving this, the purpose is to save the world and deliver all beings. Conversely, if one does not have faith in the Buddha, even if one follows the teachings in theory and acts accordingly, it is difficult to resonate with the Buddha-heart, and thus difficult to achieve success. The fourfold assembly should reflect on this: if you still prioritise your own personality traits and follow the dictates of your own karma, you will continue to suffer from old age, sickness, and the various miseries of life. This is not the conduct of one who truly believes in the Buddha. A person of faith has a firm and unshakable conviction; they are able to change quickly, changing in the very present moment. By changing your personality traits, chanting the Buddha's name with diligence, and continuing this practice, you will surely make progress and move step by step toward realising your true nature.
