The Threshold of

Teachings from Namo Amituofo: The Buddha’s Gate is the sacred threshold that leads to the attainment of Buddhahood. It is a place defined by its purpose and its purity. Within this gate, one finds the environment necessary to cultivate the path to becoming a Buddha. Outside of this gate lies the secular world, a realm often clouded by the dust of worldly attachments and confusion.

When we speak of entering the Buddha’s Gate, we are referring to the commitment made by the fourfold assembly—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. It is especially vital for those who have left the home life to become monastics to enter this gate and engage in diligent practice. By doing so, they dedicate their lives to the pursuit of the Buddha’s path, seeking to attain the ultimate goal of Buddhahood.

Cultivating the Pure Conduct of the Buddha

The closer one’s physical actions, speech, and thoughts remain to the secular world, the more one becomes stained by its impurities, and consequently, the further one drifts from the Buddha’s Gate. Conversely, the more one aligns one’s physical actions, speech, and thoughts with the teachings of the Buddha, the more one’s heart and mind become pure.

Upon entering the Buddha’s Gate, one must adopt the dignified conduct befitting a practitioner. Beyond the necessary duties of serving the community, one’s conduct should be guided by the following principles:

  • The Practice of Silence: One should observe the practice of noble silence or speak very little, allowing the name of Namo Amituofo to replace idle chatter.
  • Constant Remembrance: One should maintain the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo with the mouth, while keeping the Buddha in one’s heart and mind at all times.
  • Pure Actions: Every movement of should be an expression of the Buddha’s teachings, and every thought should be a pure, focused intention to remain in harmony with the Buddha.

The Vow to Save All Beings

By taking refuge in the Gate one has chosen, one must hold it in the highest regard. Within the pure environment of the Buddha’s Gate, the practitioner demonstrates the following path to the fourfold assembly and to all people in the world:

  • The Goal of Practice: To engage in diligent practice with the singular aim of attaining the state of an awakened being.
  • The Vow of : To dedicate one’s practice to save all beings, helping them find liberation from being reincarnated and guiding them to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
  • The Life of Purity: To uphold the pure Dharma, maintaining a life of spiritual cleanliness that brings dignity and sanctity to the Buddha’s Gate.
