The Harmony of Our Differences
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on May 11, 2019, at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre
Venerable Changren, a monastic who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, currently resides at the centre. This interview was recorded on May 11, 2019, to capture the Venerable's insights on the nature of spiritual practice. The record was transcribed by the chief writer, Shi Faxi.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. In the journey of spiritual practice, I observe the differences among everyone with great clarity, yet I also see the profound similarities that bind us all together. Within the realm of practice, each individual undergoes their own unique mutations and transformations. We each carry our own distinct manifestations—some are perceived as good, others as bad. The critical question for every practitioner is: How do you think? How do you perceive these challenges? How do you face them? These are the most vital aspects of your journey.
You must look deeply into your own heart. If you are unable to prepare your true self-nature for the rigours of the path, your mind will constantly be shaken by external circumstances. When the mind is unstable, you cannot truly practise, nor can you make the necessary changes that are uniquely suited to your own growth. You must be the master of your own transformation."
The Tapestry of Our Habits
"Everyone possesses differences, yet everyone also shares a fundamental commonality. As the saying goes, 'at birth, human nature is inherently good.' Every single person possesses that same most sincere, pure, and pristine heart. However, we also carry the weight of the personality traits and habits we have accumulated over countless lifetimes. Each of us has innate instincts, as well as skills acquired through learning in this life. Some of these are expressed openly in our physical actions, while others remain hidden deep within the heart. These are the differences that define us, yet they are also the very things that make us the same—we are all navigating the same sea of karmic imprints.
How, then, can one attain a truly free and at-ease self? It depends entirely on whether you can navigate the differences between these similarities and distinctions. You must ask yourself: How do I integrate my own being? You must first learn to identify with yourself—to accept both your strengths and your weaknesses. This means learning not to discriminate against yourself. Whether an event is significant or trivial, treat them with the same . When you can merge these aspects into one, you will no longer see these artificial divisions. You will stop competing with yourself, stop judging your own progress, and simply follow the conditions of the moment with a natural, pure heart."
The Singularity of Faith
"True practice requires that we abandon all forms of discrimination. There should be no 'different' or 'separate' states of mind. As long as there is genuine, tangible change—a truly upright heart—you can transform every experience into a catalyst for growth. I can see everyone clearly, and the void of the universe sees you even more clearly than you can imagine. It sees through you with a transparency that is absolute. When you act, you must act with sincerity; when you perform, you must perform with truth. Let your actions be the natural expression of your practice.
I am deeply grateful for the of the Buddha, and I am grateful to Grandma for her guidance. Namo Amituofo."
