The Kingdom Within

A true king is one who possesses the capacity to govern the realm with benevolence. By doing so, he ensures that the hearts of his people remain at peace, shielding them from disaster and hardship. This is the mark of a benevolent ruler. In the same way, your heart acts as the king of your own existence. It is the sovereign power that leads both your physical body and your spirit.

If you can govern this heart well, you will ensure that your body remains free from the premature decay of illness, and your spirit will find a stable, secure place to rest. This is the heart of one who has realised their true nature. Consider your body as a vast universe, or a great kingdom. Within this kingdom, your cells are like the countless citizens and civilians. While these cells have physical forms that are too numerous to count, your spirit represents the invisible inhabitants—the true essence of who you are.

The cells of your body manifest through the combination of multiple , yet your spirit is something entirely different. It is unborn and undying; it is without beginning or end.

The Cycle of Endless Wandering

Why is it, then, that the spirit remains trapped, wandering through the cycle of reincarnated existence in the six realms of existence? It is because the Heart-King has acted in delusion. Lacking meditative concentration and wisdom, the mind has allowed and the spirit to be ravaged by both internal enemies and external threats.

When the body faces the suffering of death—the elements separate—the spirit becomes scattered, restless, and unable to find peace. Ultimately, when this life ends, the spirit is pulled back into the cycle of reincarnated existence, forced to endure further suffering. It finds it nearly impossible to escape the vast ocean of . This is the tragedy of a kingdom without a wise ruler.

The Path to Inner Sovereignty

If you wish to change this, you must learn to tame and regulate this heart. But how does one achieve such a transformation? The path is clear and has been walked by all the Buddhas before us:

  • Uphold the : By maintaining discipline, you create the foundation for stability.
  • Cultivate meditative concentration: Through a steady mind, you develop the strength to remain unmoved by external disturbances.
  • Awaken wisdom: Once concentration is firm, wisdom naturally manifests.
  • Purify the mind: By removing defilements and attaining purity, the light of your true nature will shine forth.

You must suppress your delusions and stop the constant movement of the mind. When you stop this restless movement, you will find peace. When you find peace, you will achieve true equilibrium. In this state of stillness, where there is not a single trace of impurity or attachment, the light of your heart will illuminate the darkness.

The Universal Truth of the Heart

When this heart acts as a wise king, possessing true wisdom, your true self is revealed. To reach this state is to have succeeded in your practice, and it is a great blessing for all beings. This Heart-King is not merely a concept; it is the embodiment of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.

This truth is not limited to this moment in time. It holds true for the past, present, and future. It is not confined to this specific space; it is the same throughout the Ten Directions of the Realm. It is not only applicable to the human world; it is the same for all beings across the six realms of existence. Whether in the human world or in the Demon Realm, the fundamental nature of the heart remains the same. The differences we perceive between these realms arise only because the hearts of the beings within them are different, leading to different actions and different manifestations.

Turning Inward to Find the Truth

The Buddha has no personal mind of his own, yet he encompasses the infinite space of the Ten Directions, the endless Dharma Realm, and the immeasurable number of beings within it. The six realms of existence, the human world, and even the Demon Realm are all contained within this vast, empty, and compassionate state.

Therefore, you must put in the work of cultivation starting from your own heart. Seek the truth within, not outside of yourself. Your heart is already complete and perfect; it lacks nothing. It is only because it has become stained by external influences that you fail to see this completeness and instead perceive only lack.

Seeking externally is an illusion; it is not the truth. Seeking internally is the only way to find what is real. If you wish to see the truth, you must be diligent. If your current level of diligent practice is insufficient, you must become even more fiercely diligent. Your greatest enemies are:

  • Delusion, discrimination, and attachment: These cloud your perception.
  • Emotion and karma: These bind you to the cycle of suffering.

You must conquer these internal enemies for your practice to bear fruit. This is the time to realise your true nature. When you do, you will be able to follow the Buddha-actions, save yourself, and help all beings achieve rebirth in the .
