The Radiant Essence of Buddhahood

A Buddha is one who has achieved the perfection of self-, the awakening of others, and the completion of all awakened conduct. This state of being is defined by three essential qualities:

  • Self-Awakening: The Buddha has fully awakened to the truth of his own nature.
  • Awakening Others: The Buddha possesses the profound ability to guide all sentient beings toward their own awakening.
  • Perfect Awakening: The Buddha’s practice of awakening is complete; he has perfectly integrated the wisdom of self-awakening and the of awakening others.

Awakening is a state of the spirit that manifests as a transformation of and mind. When one truly awakens, one can perceive the illusory nature of this world. One understands the difference between transient, illusory phenomena and the eternal Truth, and thus, one is no longer deceived by the distractions of the world. In this state, the personal ego and selfishness are entirely dissolved, allowing the practitioner to realise the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and to reveal their true self.

The Compassionate Vow to Relieve Suffering

Throughout the ten directions and the three periods of time, all Buddhas—such as Lokesvararaja Buddha, Namo Amituofo, Shakyamuni Buddha, and Medicine Buddha—share a singular, compassionate mission. Why do the Buddhas teach? They teach solely to relieve the suffering of sentient beings. Why does this teaching never cease? It is because the suffering of sentient beings in the cycle of rebirth has never ceased.

Every Buddha resides in their own Buddha-land, teaching the to liberate beings from their pain. When Shakyamuni Buddha attained Buddhahood in India, he taught the Dharma without interruption for forty-nine years. In every action, every movement, and every moment of his daily life, he was teaching. He tailored his methods to the specific capacity of each being, addressing their unique problems. Although his methods were diverse, his goal remained the same: to help beings resolve their difficulties, leave suffering behind, and attain the path of awakening.

The Infinite Light of the

For ten kalpas, Namo Amituofo has also been teaching continuously in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. His purpose is to provide a magnificent environment where beings can listen to the sutras, hear the Dharma, and cultivate both merit and wisdom. By accumulating these virtues, they can swiftly realise their true nature, attain Buddhahood, and enter the Land of Eternally Quiescent Light.

All Buddhas throughout the ten directions and the three periods of time, while teaching in their own lands, unanimously praise Namo Amituofo and his Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. They all encourage beings to chant the name of Namo Amituofo and seek rebirth in that glorious land. This sacred work is currently unfolding across all the Buddha-lands of the ten directions.
