The Nature of Fear and Courage

In this world and beyond, what should one truly fear, and what should one not fear? The distinction between the two is profound and essential for every practitioner. The difference lies entirely in one's understanding of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. Those who have clearly realised these truths will naturally move forward with unwavering courage when it comes to actions that benefit all beings. They do not hesitate to perform what is right and necessary.

However, when it comes to actions that are improper, or actions that benefit oneself while causing harm to the collective, they are filled with caution and deep respect for the laws of and cause and effect. They are extremely careful and dare not create any negative causes or commit any transgressions. This is the mark of one who truly understands the gravity of their actions.

The Wisdom of the Wise

Bodhisattvas, true spiritual friends, and wise persons possess a clear vision of reality. Their approach to life is defined by a healthy sense of caution:

  • They fear the suffering of , and therefore, they do not create any negative causes.
  • They fear the loss of autonomy within the cycle of reincarnation, and therefore, they engage in diligent practice.
  • They actively seek the path of Truth and liberation to transcend the limitations of the world.

In contrast, beings who do not understand the laws of karma and cause and effect, or who choose to ignore them due to ignorance, often act in ways that lead to their own downfall. They seek temporary convenience and fleeting pleasure, and in doing so, they plant the seeds of future suffering. They do not fear the suffering of retribution until it manifests. By the time the bitter fruit of their actions appears, they are filled with regret, yet it is often too late to change the outcome.

The Illusion of

We must realise that this physical body is an illusion. It is formed by the combination of multiple —earth, water, fire, and wind. When these Causal Conditions cease, the elements separate, and returns to nothingness. Though our time in this world is limited, this life is incredibly precious because it provides the opportunity for practice. Thus, we choose to engage in True Cultivation, using this temporary vessel to reach the eternal.

The Path to

We must recognise that the 'self' is also an illusion, a construct of karma and Causal Conditions. Because we understand this, we are no longer deceived by the or the ego. Our practice is guided by a clear set of priorities:

  • We fear creating karma and violating the , so we remain careful and cautious in every thought, word, and deed.
  • We do not fear the trials and tribulations of the path, for we know they are necessary for our growth.
  • We remain active and persistent in our diligent practice, never allowing ourselves to become complacent.

Through this unwavering dedication, we elevate the quality of one's spirit, refining our inner nature until we reach the state of an awakened being. Namo Amituofo.
